Enchanting
Status effects
Every Minecraft status effect: what causes it, how long it lasts, what each amplifier level does, and how to cut it short with milk or honey.
AbsorptionPositiveGrants temporary yellow hearts that absorb damage before your real health. They do not regenerate.
Bad LuckNegativeWorsens fishing loot quality. Like Luck, it has no survival source.
Bad OmenNegativeTriggers a raid when you enter a village. Since 1.21 killing a raid captain drops an Ominous Bottle rather than applying the effect directly, and drinking that bottle is what gives you Bad Omen; at the village boundary it then converts into Raid Omen instead of starting the raid instantly.
BlindnessNegativeReduces your view to a few blocks and prevents sprinting. Suspicious stew is the survival source — an azure bluet gives 8 seconds of it, an open eyeblossom 11. The Warden inflicts Darkness, which is a different effect.
Conduit PowerPositiveCombines Water Breathing, Night Vision underwater and Haste. Granted automatically near an activated conduit.
DarknessNegativePulses the screen to near-total black. The Warden and the sculk shrieker inflict it to disorient you in the Deep Dark.
Dolphin's GracePositiveIncreases swimming speed sharply while you stay near a dolphin. It cannot be bottled.
Fire ResistancePositiveGrants complete immunity to fire, lava and blaze fireballs. Essential for Nether exploration and for building near lava.
GlowingNegativeOutlines the entity so it can be seen through walls by everyone. Spectral arrows are the survival source.
HastePositiveIncreases mining speed by 20% and attack speed by 10% per level. A beacon set to Haste transforms large excavation projects.
Health BoostPositiveAdds 4 extra maximum health per level. The extra hearts disappear when the effect ends.
Hero of the VillagePositiveGives large discounts on villager trades and occasional gifts from villagers. Awarded for defeating a raid.
HungerNegativeDrains the hunger bar far faster than normal. Rotten flesh is the usual culprit.
InfestedNegativeGives a chance to spawn silverfish when you take damage. Introduced with the ominous trial spawner effects in 1.21.
Instant DamageNegativeDeals damage immediately. Undead mobs are healed by it instead, which makes it useless against skeletons and zombies.
Instant HealthPositiveRestores health immediately rather than over time. Against undead mobs it does the opposite and deals damage.
InvisibilityPositiveMakes you invisible, though worn armour, held items and arrows stuck in you remain visible. Most mobs notice you from much closer.
Jump BoostPositiveRaises jump height by roughly half a block per level and reduces fall damage by the extra height gained.
LevitationNegativePushes you upward continuously. When it ends you fall — shulkers use it to kill you with fall damage.
LuckPositiveImproves fishing loot quality. There is no survival-mode source in Java Edition.
Mining FatigueNegativeSlows mining dramatically — at level III you mine at under 3% of normal speed, so a block that takes a second by hand takes most of a minute. Elder guardians inflict it to protect ocean monuments.
NauseaNegativeWarps and wobbles the screen. It does no damage but makes precise movement genuinely difficult.
Night VisionPositiveLights everything to full brightness regardless of the actual light level. It does not stop mobs spawning — it only lets you see them.
OozingNegativeSpawns two slimes when you die. One of the 1.21 ominous effects.
PoisonNegativeDrains health over time but never kills — it stops at half a heart. Cave spiders and pufferfish are the common sources.
Raid OmenNegativeStarts a raid at the position where you gained it, shortly after you enter a village with Bad Omen.
RegenerationPositiveRestores health steadily over time. It is the most efficient healing in the game when you have time to wait.
ResistancePositiveReduces all incoming damage by 20% per level. At Resistance V you take no damage at all from most sources.
SaturationPositiveRestores hunger and saturation instantly. In survival it comes only from suspicious stew.
Slow FallingPositiveMakes you fall slowly and removes fall damage entirely. It is the safest way to descend a mountain or use an elytra.
SlownessNegativeReduces movement speed by 15% per level. At high levels you are effectively rooted in place.
SpeedPositiveIncreases walking, sprinting and swimming speed by 20% per level, and widens your field of view slightly.
StrengthPositiveAdds 3 extra melee damage per level. It does not affect bows, tridents thrown at range, or fall damage.
Trial OmenNegativeTurns nearby trial spawners into ominous trial spawners, making trial chambers harder and their loot better.
Water BreathingPositiveStops your air bar from draining underwater. Combined with a conduit it makes ocean monuments straightforward.
WeaknessNegativeReduces melee damage by 4 per level. It is also the first half of curing a zombie villager.
WeavingNegativeSpawns cobwebs where you die and lets you move faster through cobwebs while active.
Wind ChargedNegativeReleases a wind burst when you die, knocking back everything nearby.
WitherNegativeDrains health over time and, unlike Poison, will kill you. The health bar turns black while it is active.
