Nausea

Nausea

Negative

Overview

Nausea deals no damage at all, and it is still one of the effects players most want gone. The screen swims and stretches, the horizon rolls, and precise movement — a jump across lava, a shot at a moving skeleton, placing a block on the correct face — becomes guesswork for the duration. It arrives from three places you meet in ordinary play: eating a raw pufferfish, standing in a Nether portal, and eating suspicious stew brewed from a closed eyeblossom in the pale garden. The portal case is the one that surprises people, because the wobble that starts as you step through is the same effect, and it is why a portal room lined with a second exit block feels less unpleasant than a bare frame. Milk clears it, and honey does not — Nausea is not a poison-type effect, so a honey bottle leaves it running. The pale garden gave it a genuine role in 1.21.4: eyeblossoms close by day and open after dusk, and stew made from a closed one is a cheap way to hand an unsuspecting friend seven seconds of vertigo. Otherwise the practical response is to look at the ground, walk rather than sprint, and wait it out.

Nothing helpful to you — but it is the game's cheapest griefing tool on a shared world, and it doubles as an unmistakable signal that you have just eaten something you should not have.

Warps and wobbles the screen. It does no damage but makes precise movement genuinely difficult.

The game files Nausea as a harmful status effect. There is no potion of it; its duration is exactly as long as its source keeps it up.

The icon sits in the top-right of the inventory with its remaining time beneath it, and coloured particles follow you around, drawn faintly when a beacon or a conduit is the source. No beacon projects it, so every application ends on a timer.

How to get it

Eat a raw pufferfish, stand in a Nether portal, or eat suspicious stew made with a closed eyeblossom for 7 seconds of it. A pufferfish gives 15 seconds of Nausea alongside Poison and Hunger.

Tips

  • Milk removes it; a honey bottle does not, because Nausea is not classed as a poison-type effect.
  • Do not sprint or jump while it runs — most Nausea deaths are lava and ledges, not the effect itself.
  • Eyeblossoms are closed during the day, so harvest one in daylight for the Nausea stew; the open night-time form gives Blindness instead, as the pale garden guide explains.
  • Cook pufferfish? You cannot — it is the one fish with no cooked form, so keep it for Water Breathing brewing only.

What each level does

The number in a command is one lower than the level you see: Nausea II is amplifier 1. Here is each level:

Levels above I exist but cannot be obtained in survival — a command can go up to 255.

Properties

There is no potion of Nausea; it arrives from Pufferfish, Nether portal, and Suspicious Stew (closed eyeblossom) and lasts exactly as long as that source keeps applying it. Drinking milk clears it, along with every other effect you are carrying.
