Overview
An oozing mob dies into two slimes, and those slimes are medium ones — the size that splits again when killed. In an ominous trial chamber that turns a single zombie into a small crowd, and a room you thought you had cleared into a bouncing mess that pushes you around while the next wave spawns. The effect does nothing while the carrier is alive, which is the trap: the room looks winnable right up until you win it. The counter is positioning rather than gear. Kill oozing mobs where there is room for the slimes to land and be dealt with, keep a sword rather than an axe in hand so the split slimes die quickly, and clear them before the spawner produces the next wave. There is a genuine upside, though only for players who like farms. Slimes drop slime balls, and slime balls are the ingredient in sticky pistons, leads, magma cream and slime blocks — so an ominous chamber is briefly a slime farm that came to you. Away from trial chambers the effect never appears, which makes it one of the most location-specific mechanics in the game.
Nothing you would choose in a fight, but the slimes it produces drop slime balls — a genuine convenience if you need sticky pistons and have no swamp nearby.
Spawns two slimes when you die. One of the 1.21 ominous effects.
Oozing is a harmful status effect. It has no potion form: it lasts exactly as long as its source keeps applying it.
The icon sits in the top-right of the inventory with its remaining time beneath it, and coloured particles follow you around, drawn faintly when a beacon or a conduit is the source. No beacon projects it, so every application ends on a timer.
How to get it
Mobs spawned by ominous trial spawners carry it, so it requires Trial Omen in a trial chamber. For testing, /effect give @s minecraft:oozing 30 0 gives 30 seconds and spawns 2 slimes on death.
Tips
- Kill oozing mobs in open floor space, not in a doorway where two large slimes will pin you.
- A sword clears split slimes far faster than an axe, whose slow recovery is punished by numbers.
- The slime balls are worth collecting — sticky pistons, leads and slime blocks all start there.
- Clear the slimes before the next wave spawns, or the room becomes unmanageable very quickly indeed.
Version notes
Introduced in Java 1.21 with the ominous trial spawner effects; the two slimes it spawns are full-size and split when killed.
What each level does
The number in a command is one lower than the level you see: Oozing II is amplifier 1. Here is each level:
Survival stops at I; commands do not, and will accept an amplifier up to 255.
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| I | dying spawns two slimes at your position |
Properties
No potion produces Oozing. Its sources are Ominous trial spawner mobs, and its duration is whatever they give it. Milk is the only cure, and it clears every effect you are carrying at once.
