Overview
Saturation is the hidden layer of the hunger system made visible, and understanding it changes how you think about food. Behind the twenty visible hunger points sits a saturation value that drains first; while saturation is above zero the hunger bar does not move, and health regenerates. That is why a steak keeps you going for so much longer than a stack of bread despite the two showing similar hunger restoration — steak carries far more saturation. The Saturation effect fills both at once, instantly and completely, and it is the only thing in the game that does so. In survival it comes from exactly one place: suspicious stew made with a dandelion or a blue orchid. The burst lasts a fraction of a second and restores several hunger points on top of the stew's own six, which makes that one bowl the most food-dense item you can carry into a cave. Every other flower gives the stew a different effect entirely, so the two that give Saturation are worth memorising. There is no potion of it, no beacon power and no mob that hands it out, so the stew and the command are the whole list.
Refilling a low hunger bar in one bite during a fight or a long cave trip, where eating two or three cooked meals in a row is time you cannot spare.
Restores hunger and saturation instantly. In survival it comes only from suspicious stew.
The game files Saturation as a beneficial status effect. There is no potion of it; its duration is exactly as long as its source keeps it up.
While it is on you, the top-right of the inventory shows the icon and the time left, and you give off particles in the effect's colour, dimmer when the source is ambient. No beacon carries it, so each dose is finite.
How to get it
Craft suspicious stew with a dandelion or a blue orchid — 1 flower, 1 red mushroom, 1 brown mushroom and 1 bowl. The Saturation burst lasts under half a second and tops the hunger bar up by roughly 7 points on top of the stew itself.
Tips
- One bowl beats a cooked steak outright, because the stew's own food value and the Saturation burst both land at once.
- Bowls are returned when you eat the stew, so a flower farm makes this food effectively free to produce.
- Saturation, not hunger points, is what keeps health regenerating — see hunger and saturation explained.
- Suspicious stew does not stack, so carry three or four bowls rather than planning around a full slot.
What each level does
The level shown in the inventory is the amplifier plus one, which is why Saturation II is amplifier 1 in a command. Each level does the following:
Levels above I exist but cannot be obtained in survival — a command can go up to 255.
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| I | restores 1 hunger and 2 saturation every tick |
Properties
Saturation has no brewed form. It comes from Suspicious Stew, and it runs for as long as the source does. Milk is the only cure, and it clears every effect you are carrying at once.
