Fire Resistance

Overview

Fire Resistance is the closest thing Minecraft has to a key for a locked area. Without it the Nether is a place you creep through; with it lava is scenery, blazes are archers with a harmless attack, and a ghast fireball is knockback rather than a funeral. Immunity is complete rather than partial — fire, lava, magma blocks, blaze fireballs and the burning that follows all stop mattering — which is why experienced players treat a stack of these bottles as the actual entry fee for ancient debris mining. It does not protect against everything hot-adjacent, and the exceptions are the ones that kill: fall damage from panicking above a lava lake still applies, a wither skeleton's sword still hurts, and the Wither effect itself is unrelated. Magma cream is the ingredient, and it is craftable rather than rare — one blaze powder and one slime ball — so once you have a blaze farm the potion costs nothing. The single most common mistake is drinking one and forgetting the timer: the effect ending while you are standing in lava is a death that leaves your entire inventory in the lava with you.

Working inside the Nether safely — strip-mining for ancient debris at Y 15, crossing lava lakes, raiding bastions and fighting blazes — and rescuing items that have fallen into lava at home.

Grants complete immunity to fire, lava and blaze fireballs. Essential for Nether exploration and for building near lava.

Fire Resistance is a beneficial status effect. A base potion of it lasts 180 seconds.

While it is active the icon sits in the top-right of the inventory screen with the time remaining under it, and particles in the effect's own colour trail off you, fainter when the source is ambient — a beacon or a conduit. No beacon offers it, so every application has a fixed duration.

How to get it

Brew magma cream into an Awkward Potion for a 3:00 Potion of Fire Resistance, or 8:00 with redstone. Magma cream is crafted from 1 blaze powder plus 1 slime ball, and magma cubes drop it directly.

Tips

• Always carry two bottles: the second is for the moment the first runs out while you are still standing in lava.
• It makes ancient debris mining sane; pair it with the routes in ancient debris and netherite.
• Fall damage is unaffected, so a lava lake is still lethal if you drop into the basalt beside it from height.
• Ferment one with a fermented spider eye and you get Slowness, which is the cheapest use for a spare bottle.

What each level does

Levels are shown one-based in the inventory and zero-based in commands, so Fire Resistance II is written amplifier 1. Per level:

Survival stops at I; commands do not, and will accept an amplifier up to 255.

Properties

The base potion runs 180 seconds. Redstone stretches that to 480, while glowstone spends the duration on a second level and leaves . Thrown as a splash, either keeps three quarters of its time on you. A bucket of milk removes it, at the cost of every other effect you have running.

Potion durations

Brewing is where most players meet Fire Resistance. The base potion runs 180 seconds; adding redstone dust extends it to 480, and glowstone dust raises the level instead, which costs duration and leaves seconds. You cannot have both on one potion.
