Overview
Regeneration is the healing you plan for, as opposed to the healing you panic for. It ticks health back steadily and it works while you are doing something else — fighting, mining, running — which makes it the single most valuable effect to have running before a hard encounter rather than during one. The trade-off written into the brewing recipe is duration: the base potion is deliberately short, so this is a buff you drink at the door of a raid or a mansion, not one you carry across an afternoon. Its most common form is not a potion at all. Every golden apple carries Regeneration alongside Absorption, and eight gold ingots are far easier to find than a ghast tear, which is why most players' first experience of the effect comes from an apple in a dungeon chest. The enchanted golden apple carries a much stronger version for far longer, and it is the reason a single one can turn a lost fight around. Regeneration also heals undead mobs normally, unlike Instant Health, so a splash bottle thrown into a zombie crowd repairs them — a mistake worth making only once.
Sustained healing through a fight you know is coming — a raid, a wither summon, a mansion — where topping health up continuously beats waiting for hunger-driven regeneration.
Restores health steadily over time. It is the most efficient healing in the game when you have time to wait.
As a status effect, Regeneration counts as beneficial. From a base potion you get 45 seconds of it.
The icon sits in the top-right of the inventory with its remaining time beneath it, and coloured particles follow you around, drawn faintly when a beacon or a conduit is the source. No beacon projects it, so every application ends on a timer.
How to get it
Brew a ghast tear into an Awkward Potion for 45 seconds; redstone extends it to 1:30 and glowstone gives Regeneration II for 22 seconds. A golden apple grants it for 5 seconds, and 8 gold ingots make one.
Tips
- Golden apples are the cheap route: 8 gold ingots beats hunting ghasts, and the apple adds absorption hearts too.
- Hunger-driven natural healing needs a full food bar, so Regeneration is what keeps you alive while you are too busy to eat.
- Splash Regeneration heals undead mobs normally — do not throw it into a zombie crowd expecting the Instant Health inversion.
- Ghast tears also make Potions of Regeneration for other players; a splash bottle is the best support item in a group raid.
What each level does
The number in a command is one lower than the level you see: Regeneration II is amplifier 1. Here is each level:
Anything above II is command-only — the amplifier field runs as far as 255.
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| I | 1 health every 50 ticks (2.50 s) |
| II | 1 health every 25 ticks (1.25 s) |
Properties
Expect 45 seconds from the base potion, 90 once redstone is in, and 22 for the glowstone level-II version — you cannot have both. A splash potion gives the thrower three quarters of the listed time. Milk is the only cure, and it clears every effect you are carrying at once. Undead mobs regenerate from it normally, unlike instant health.

Potion durations
Brewing is where most players meet Regeneration. The base potion runs 45 seconds; adding redstone dust extends it to 90, and glowstone dust raises the level instead, which costs duration and leaves 22 seconds. You cannot have both on one potion.
| Potion | Base | Extended | Level II |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drinkable | 45 s | 90 s | 22 s |
| Splash | 34 s | 68 s | 17 s |
| Lingering | 11 s | 23 s | 5.5 s |
