Overview
Invisibility does far less than its name suggests, and knowing exactly how much less is what makes it useful. Mobs still notice you, just from much closer — hostile mobs' detection range shrinks dramatically, so a zombie that would have spotted you across a clearing only reacts when you are almost on top of it. That is enough to walk through a mob-heavy area unmolested, and not enough to stand in one. Worn armour is the catch that ruins most attempts: every equipped piece stays fully visible, floating in the shape of a person, so an invisible player in full netherite is an obvious target with a slightly transparent middle. Held items, arrows stuck in you and any particle effect you are trailing give you away too, which is why the classic use is to strip to nothing and run past a guarded area. Two mobs ignore it entirely. Endermen still react to your gaze, and any mob that was already targeting you keeps its target. On a multiplayer server the effect's real home is the moment before a fight, not the fight itself — a splash bottle and a bare inventory buys a repositioning nobody sees.
Slipping past hostile mobs without fighting them — crossing a bastion, retreating from a lost fight, or moving through a monster-filled cave when killing everything would cost more than it earns.
Makes you invisible, though worn armour, held items and arrows stuck in you remain visible. Most mobs notice you from much closer.
Invisibility is a beneficial status effect. A base potion of it lasts 180 seconds.
The icon sits in the top-right of the inventory with its remaining time beneath it, and coloured particles follow you around, drawn faintly when a beacon or a conduit is the source. No beacon projects it, so every application ends on a timer.
How to get it
Ferment a Potion of Night Vision with 1 fermented spider eye for a 3:00 Potion of Invisibility, extended to 8:00 with redstone. That means brewing a golden carrot potion first, so each bottle costs 8 gold nuggets in ingredients.
Tips
- Take your armour off first; equipped pieces stay fully visible and give away your position exactly.
- Endermen still react to being looked at, and mobs already targeting you do not forget, so drink before you are seen.
- Potion particles still trail off you, so keep moving and break line of sight rather than standing still in the open.
- It is the standard opening for a piglin bastion run; see Nether travel and survival for the rest of the kit.
What each level does
Levels are shown one-based in the inventory and zero-based in commands, so Invisibility II is written amplifier 1. Per level:
Survival stops at I; commands do not, and will accept an amplifier up to 255.
| Level | Effect |
|---|---|
| I | the body becomes invisible; worn armour, held items and arrows stuck in you stay visible |
Properties
A base potion lasts 180 seconds. Redstone extends it to 480 seconds, and glowstone trades duration for a second level, dropping it to seconds. A splash potion of either keeps three quarters of that duration on the thrower. Drinking milk clears it, along with every other effect you are carrying.

Potion durations
Brewing is where most players meet Invisibility. The base potion runs 180 seconds; adding redstone dust extends it to 480, and glowstone dust raises the level instead, which costs duration and leaves seconds. You cannot have both on one potion.
| Potion | Base | Extended | Level II |

| Splash | 135 s | 360 s | — |
| Lingering | 45 s | 120 s | — |
Where it comes from
Invisibility comes from Potion of Invisibility.
- Potion of Invisibility
Command
Cheats on, this applies Invisibility I for half a minute. That final digit is the amplifier — 1 gives you level II.

Frequently asked questions
How long does Invisibility last?
Base 180 seconds, extended 480 seconds, level II — seconds.
How do I get rid of Invisibility?
Drink milk. It clears this and every other effect you are carrying.
Is Invisibility good or bad?
Beneficial, so it is worth keeping up. Be aware that a fermented spider eye in the chain turns its potion into one of Night Vision.
