Overview

Jump Boost is the most under-appreciated building tool in the game. The extra half-block of height per level sounds like a novelty, and in a fight it very nearly is — but on a build site it means you can step up two blocks without placing a slab, and reach a scaffold line you would otherwise have to ladder to. Level II is the practical ceiling from a potion, and it also carries a safety clause worth understanding: the additional height the effect grants is subtracted from any fall you take, so a jump that would normally hurt you does not. That makes it a mild fall-damage shield as well as a mobility buff, though nothing like the guarantee that Slow Falling gives. Rabbit's foot is the ingredient, and rabbits are the awkward part — they are uncommon, they flee, and the foot is a low-probability drop, so most players brew this once and never again. The far more common encounter with Jump Boost is a rabbit-shaped one anyway: the killer bunny is a joke mob, but a horse eating a Leaping potion is not, since a mounted rider keeps the effect and a horse under Jump Boost clears fences that were built to contain it.

Building and traversal — stepping up two blocks without placing scaffolding, crossing broken terrain quickly, and shaving a little damage off falls you did not intend to take.

Raises jump height by roughly half a block per level and reduces fall damage by the extra height gained.

Jump Boost is a beneficial status effect. A base potion of it lasts 180 seconds.

The icon sits in the top-right of the inventory with its remaining time beneath it, and coloured particles follow you around, drawn faintly when a beacon or a conduit is the source. No beacon projects it, so every application ends on a timer.

How to get it

Brew a rabbit's foot into an Awkward Potion for a 3:00 Potion of Leaping; redstone extends it to 8:00 and glowstone gives Leaping II for 1:30. A rabbit drops its foot only about 10% of the time, so expect several hunts.

Tips

  • The bonus height is deducted from fall damage, so a two-block hop under Leaping II costs you nothing on landing.
  • Feed it to a horse and it keeps the effect, which is how riders clear a three-block fence without a horse bred for jump height.
  • Ferment a Potion of Leaping with a fermented spider eye and you get Slowness — a useful second use for a rare foot.
  • Rabbits are easiest to farm in a snowy or desert biome; check the breeding guide before hunting wild ones.

What each level does

What the inventory calls level II is amplifier 1, because the amplifier counts from zero. Level by level:

Survival stops at II; commands do not, and will accept an amplifier up to 255.

Properties

Straight from the stand it lasts 180 seconds, 480 with redstone dust added, or 90 if you spend the duration on level II with glowstone instead. Splash versions land at three quarters of the time. A bucket of milk removes it, at the cost of every other effect you have running.

Potion durations

Brewing is where most players meet Jump Boost. The base potion runs 180 seconds; adding redstone dust extends it to 480, and glowstone dust raises the level instead, which costs duration and leaves 90 seconds. You cannot have both on one potion.

Where it comes from

Command
