Two animals fed the right item enter love mode and produce one baby, then cannot breed again for five minutes. A baby takes 20 minutes to become an adult, and feeding it its breeding food cuts 10% off the remaining time each time. Cows are the highest-value animal in the game: cooked beef restores 8 hunger with 12.8 saturation, and leather is the only renewable source of books.
What every animal eats
| Animal | Breeding food | Main product |
|---|---|---|
| Cow | Wheat | Raw beef, leather |

| Rabbit | Carrot, golden carrot, dandelion | Raw rabbit, rabbit's foot, hide |
| Goat | Wheat | Milk, horns |
| Horse | Golden apple, golden carrot | Transport |
| Llama | Hay bale | Caravan transport |
| Wolf | Any meat, including rotten flesh | Combat companion |
| Cat | Raw cod or salmon | Repels creepers |
| Fox | Sweet berries, glow berries | — |
| Panda | Bamboo | Bamboo, slime balls |
| Turtle | Seagrass | Turtle scute |
| Bee | Any flower | Honey, honeycomb |
| Axolotl | Bucket of tropical fish | Underwater ally |
| Frog | Slime ball | Froglights |
| Camel | Cactus | Two-seat transport |
| Sniffer | Torchflower seeds | Ancient seeds |
| Armadillo | Spider eye | Scutes for wolf armour |
Feeding a baby its breeding food does not make it breed — it accelerates growth. Adults fed while already on cooldown simply eat the item for nothing, so watch the hearts.
Setting up a cow farm
Cows are where you should start.
- Fence a 10×10 area near your wheat plot, lit and with a gate.
- Lead two cows in with wheat held in your hand — animals follow the food from about 10 blocks.
- Feed both. They produce a calf and enter a five-minute cooldown.
- Grow the herd to about 12 adults, then stop.
Twelve is roughly the right number: enough that a breeding round produces six calves, few enough that they do not lag the chunk or push each other through fences.
Yields per cow killed: 1–3 raw beef, 1–3 leather. Looting III raises both by up to 3.
Twelve cows bred and slaughtered gives around 24 beef, which is 24 cooked beef — 192 hunger points and 307 saturation. That is several hours of play from one round.
Sheep, and why you should shear rather than kill
Sheep drop 1 wool when killed but 1–3 wool when sheared, and the wool grows back whenever the sheep eats grass. A flock of eight sheep sheared on a rotation supplies unlimited wool for beds, banners and the beds you will need for blast-mining ancient debris in the Nether.
Dye a few sheep permanently if you want coloured wool without dyeing the output.
Chickens and the egg loop
Chickens lay an egg every 5 to 10 minutes with no input at all. Throwing an egg has a 1-in-8 chance of hatching a chick, so eggs are a self-sustaining source of new chickens.
The simple automatic version:
- A pen with 10–15 chickens, a hopper floor collecting eggs into a chest
- A dispenser fed by that chest, on a slow clock, throwing eggs into a nursery below
- Adult chickens dropped onto a campfire or hopper-collected kill chamber
Cooked chicken is 6 hunger and 7.2 saturation — clearly behind beef — but chickens also produce feathers for arrows, which nothing else renewable does at that rate.
Pigs, rabbits and the ones you can skip
Pigs give cooked porkchop, identical to steak at 8 hunger and 12.8 saturation, but they breed on carrots and potatoes, which are also food. Cows breed on wheat, which is not. That makes cows more efficient overall, though a pig pen is a fine second source.
Rabbits are worth keeping only for rabbit's feet (Potion of Leaping) and rabbit stew, which restores 10 hunger in one item.
Skip goats, llamas, pandas and foxes as food producers — none of them feed you.
Cooking efficiently
A smoker cooks food in 5 seconds against a furnace's 10. Build two smokers beside your animal pen and feed them charcoal or, better, dried kelp blocks.
A hopper-fed setup — chest above a hopper into the smoker, fuel hopper into its side, output hopper into a collection chest — turns a stack of raw beef into a stack of steak with one click and no supervision.
Wolves and the combat side of breeding
Tamed wolves fight for you, and they breed on any meat including rotten flesh, which they eat with no ill effect. A pack of four wolves handles most surface mobs. They take fall damage and wander into lava, so keep them sitting when you go underground.
Cats, tamed with raw cod or salmon, scare creepers away within 6 blocks — a genuine base defence dressed up as decoration.
Mob cap and performance
Animals count towards the passive mob cap, and large herds cause lag. Practical limits:
- 12–16 cows, 8 sheep, 15 chickens is a complete food system
- Keep pens separate, not one enormous field
- Kill the surplus rather than letting it accumulate
- Babies and adults both count, so slaughter before breeding again
Frequently asked questions
How long until I can breed the same animal again?
Five minutes. The heart particles stop immediately after breeding and the cooldown is per-animal, so a herd bred at the same time becomes available again together. Babies take 20 minutes to mature, and feeding a baby its breeding food removes 10% of the remaining time per feed.
What is the best food animal?
Cows, by a clear margin. Cooked beef ties for the best hunger and saturation values of any ordinary food, cows breed on wheat which is not itself a meal, and they drop leather, which you need for books and therefore for bookshelves and enchanting. Pigs match the food values but consume food to breed.
Can animals despawn?
Passive animals do not despawn naturally once spawned, and named animals never despawn. They can still be lost: they wander through open gates, take fall damage, drown, get killed by mobs, and are pushed through fences by crowding. Fence properly, light the pen, and roof it if phantoms or pillagers are around.
Do I need to feed animals to keep them alive?
No. Animals in Minecraft never starve and require no upkeep. Food is only used for breeding, taming and healing. A pen of cows left alone for a hundred in-game days will be exactly as you left it.
Is a leather farm worth building separately?
Rarely. Cows produce leather as a by-product of the beef you are already farming, and a 12-cow rotation yields plenty for books and armour. If you need leather in bulk for a large bookshelf build, breed and slaughter more frequently rather than building a dedicated machine.
