How to Get a Saddle in Minecraft

A saddle cannot be crafted in any version of Java Edition. Here are the seven places it actually comes from, ranked by how fast each one is.

7 min read · Updated · Java Edition 1.21.4

There is no saddle recipe. Leather, iron and string will not make one, and no version of Java Edition has ever let you craft one. A saddle is loot, a trade, or a mob drop, and that is the whole answer.

The useful question is which of those routes is fastest from where you are standing. In rough order:

Route Reliability Effort
Leatherworker villager, master level Guaranteed, repeatable Medium — needs a levelled villager
Ravager kill Guaranteed, one per ravager Medium — needs a raid
Dungeon and structure chests Common roll Low, but random
Fishing treasure Rare roll Low effort, high patience
Killing a saddled pig or strider Guaranteed if you find one Luck

The reliable route: a leatherworker

A leatherworker villager at master level sells a saddle for 6 emeralds. It is the only source in the game that is repeatable on demand, and it is the reason most players stop hunting chests for saddles entirely.

Getting there:

  1. Place a cauldron next to an unemployed villager to make it a leatherworker.
  2. Trade with it repeatedly to level it up — leather and rabbit hide purchases are the cheap way through the early tiers.
  3. At master level, the saddle appears in its offers.

If the villager takes a profession you did not want, break the job site block and place the right one. The full rerolling and levelling procedure is in villager trading and how to get cheap Mending.

The fast route if you can fight: a ravager

Every ravager drops a saddle when killed. Not a chance of one — one, every time.

Ravagers appear in raid waves from wave three onwards, so a raid started deliberately with an Ominous Bottle is a saddle farm as well as a source of totems. They hit for 12, disable shields with their roar, and should not be fought in the open; a doorway or a two-block ledge turns the fight around completely.

Chests, which is how most people get their first one

Saddles roll in the loot tables of:

  • Dungeon chests — the most common source in ordinary play, and dungeons are everywhere underground
  • Nether fortress chests
  • Desert pyramid and jungle pyramid chests
  • Village chests
  • Bastion remnant chests

Each of these is covered with its full loot list in every structure and its loot. If you are already mining at diamond depth you will walk into dungeons anyway, so a saddle usually arrives without being looked for.

Fishing

A saddle is in the treasure category of the fishing loot table, alongside enchanted books, name tags and nautilus shells. Treasure only rolls when you fish in open water, and the odds improve with Luck of the Sea.

It is the slowest route on this page and the only one you can do from a chair, which is exactly why some players prefer it.

Saddled mobs

Some mobs generate wearing a saddle you can take:

  • Striders ridden by a zombified piglin in the Nether spawn saddled. Kill the strider and the saddle drops.
  • Pigs never spawn saddled, but any pig you have saddled yourself returns the saddle when killed.

What a saddle is for

Mob Also needs Notes
Horse, donkey, mule Nothing else Tame it first by mounting repeatedly until hearts appear
Camel Nothing else Seats two players; only found in desert villages
Pig Carrot on a stick Slow, and mostly a joke
Strider Warped fungus on a stick The only practical way to cross a Nether lava sea

A llama cannot take a saddle at all — it takes a carpet, and it cannot be ridden regardless. Horses, donkeys and mules must be tamed before the saddle can go on; a tamed horse with a saddle is still the fastest ground transport in the game outside a Nether tunnel, which is why the Nether travel guide is the other half of this answer.

Breeding your horses to improve their speed and jump is worth doing once you have two good ones — the mechanics are the same love-mode system covered in animal breeding and food production.

Frequently asked questions

Is there really no saddle recipe?

None, in Java Edition 1.21.4 or any version before it. Recipes circulated on other sites are usually Bedrock rumours or old mod recipes.

Can I put a saddle on a llama?

No. Llamas take a carpet for decoration and can be led with a lead, but cannot be ridden. A caravan of wild llamas will follow a llama you are leading, and you cannot ride any of them.

Do saddles have durability?

No. A saddle is permanent, cannot be enchanted, and is returned to you when you remove it from a horse's inventory or kill the animal wearing it.

What is the single fastest way to get a saddle in a fresh world?

Find a dungeon. They generate throughout the underground, they are obvious once you hear the mobs in the spawner room, and their two chests hold saddles more often than anything else you will pass on the way to diamonds.

Can I trade for a saddle from any villager?

Only a leatherworker, and only at master level. No other profession offers one.
