Saddle

Overview

A Saddle is the only way to steer a mount, and it has never had a crafting recipe — which is why new players spend their first week wondering what they are doing wrong. Horses, donkeys, mules and camels need one before they will go where you point them; pigs need one plus a Carrot on a Stick; striders need one plus a Warped Fungus on a Stick, and that combination is the standard way to cross a Nether lava lake. A saddled mount is genuinely faster than walking — a fast horse moves at roughly 14 blocks per second against your sprint of 5.6 — and a horse can jump five blocks with the right breeding, which makes early exploration much less painful. Saddles never wear out and are not consumed, so one saddle serves for the life of the mount and can be taken back from the horse's inventory at any time. Supply is entirely loot and trading: chests in half the structures in the game, fishing treasure, and a master-level leatherworker who sells one for 6 emeralds, which is the only reliable repeatable source.

Riding and steering a horse, donkey, mule or camel, and — with the matching stick item — controlling a pig or a strider, which is how players cross Nether lava lakes without a bridge.

Saddle is a miscellaneous item in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. It is unstackable. You get it by killing Ravager.

It also turns up in chests in Village, Desert Pyramid, Jungle Pyramid, Woodland Mansion and 4 more. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

How to get it

No recipe exists. Master-level leatherworkers sell 1 saddle for 6 emeralds, and saddles generate in dungeon, nether fortress, desert temple, stronghold, village and trial-chamber chests. The saddle guide lists the odds per chest type.

Tips

  • Trade for saddles rather than hunting chests: a leatherworker at master level restocks the 6-emerald offer twice a day.
  • Donkeys and mules can carry a chest as well as a saddle, giving 15 storage slots on the move.
  • A saddle is never used up; take it back from the mount's inventory screen before you leave a horse behind.
  • Fishing gives saddles as treasure, so a rod with Luck of the Sea III is a slow but reliable source on an island start.

Properties

Saddle does not stack — each one occupies an inventory slot of its own.

Found in

Saddle is in the loot tables of Village, Desert Pyramid, Jungle Pyramid, Woodland Mansion, Dungeon (Monster Room), Ancient City and 2 more.

  • Village — Villages generate in five architectural variants — plains, desert, savanna, taiga and snowy — each built from local materials with its own house shapes, and the variant is fixed by the biome of the village centre even if it sprawls across a border.
  • Desert Pyramid — A sandstone temple with an orange-and-blue terracotta motif on its floor, always with a hidden shaft under the centre tile.
  • Jungle Pyramid — A mossy cobblestone temple buried in jungle canopy, and the only structure in the game built around an actual redstone puzzle.
  • Woodland Mansion — An enormous three-storey house of dark oak and cobblestone, generated only in dark forests and typically tens of thousands of blocks from spawn, which makes a woodland explorer map from a cartographer villager the practical way to find one.
  • Dungeon (Monster Room) — A small cobblestone-and-mossy-cobblestone room with a mob spawner in the centre and one or two chests against the walls.
  • Ancient City — A vast deepslate ruin buried in the deep dark, built around a central sculk-covered structure and a frame of reinforced deepslate that leads nowhere.
  • Nether Fortress — A dark nether brick complex of corridors, staircases, balconies and long bridges over lava.
  • End City — A tower complex of purpur blocks and end stone bricks on the outer End islands, reachable only through an end gateway after killing the dragon.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make Saddle in Minecraft?

Saddle has no crafting recipe — it drops from Ravager.

What is the stack size of Saddle?

Saddle does not stack at all. Every one you carry takes an inventory slot of its own, which is the practical limit on how many you take on a trip.
