Lava seas are what stop a Nether trip in its tracks: they are wide, they cannot be bridged quickly, and falling in ends the run. A strider crosses them at walking pace with you sitting on top, completely safe, and the fungus on a stick both points it and gives it a speed burst when you press use. Durability is 100 uses, four times what the carrot version manages, and the fishing rod comes back when the fungus is spent. Striders need a Saddle first, and they take damage in the rain and freeze on land, so lead one to the lava with a Lead rather than making it walk. Warped fungus grows in warped forests, and a strider will follow a player holding one even without being saddled, which is how most people catch their first.
