Overview

A Carrot on a Stick steers a saddled pig, and that is the whole of it — but the mechanic is more interesting than the joke suggests. Hold it while riding and the pig walks in the direction you are looking; press use and the pig gets a burst of speed for a few seconds, at the cost of durability. The item survives only 25 uses of that boost, which makes it the shortest-lived tool in the game, and when it breaks you are left holding a plain fishing rod that can simply be re-carroted. Pigs are slower than horses and steer badly, so nobody uses this for serious travel; what it is genuinely good for is a pig racing track, a novelty transport line around a base, and the advancement for travelling a measured distance on a pig. It is also the template for its far more useful cousin, the Warped Fungus on a Stick, which does the same job for striders and turns a Nether lava lake into a road. Every world should build one once, if only for the advancement.

Steering a saddled pig and giving it a short burst of speed — novelty transport, pig racing, and one of the game's oldest advancements. It steers, it boosts, and that is all.

Carrot on a Stick is one of the tools a player relies on, and like all tools it has a finite number of uses. It has 25 points of durability. It accepts enchantments at an enchanting table or anvil.

Every copy occupies a full inventory slot. It is crafted from Fishing Rod and Carrot. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.

How to get it

Craft 1 from 1 Fishing Rod and 1 Carrot. It holds 25 boost uses, and the rod is returned undamaged when the carrot is used up, ready to be re-crafted.

Tips

  • The pig needs a Saddle as well; the carrot only steers, it does not let you mount.
  • Each speed boost costs durability out of just 25 uses, so save the boosts for a race rather than the walk.
  • When it breaks you get the fishing rod back — add another carrot and it is as good as new.
  • Striders and a warped fungus version are the practical use of this mechanic; pigs are the fun one.

Properties

Carrot on a Stick lasts 25 uses before it breaks. Two worn copies can also be merged, on an anvil or a grindstone. Unbreaking III roughly quadruples the lifespan, and Mending replaces the repair cost with experience. Its enchantability of 1 decides how good the enchanting table's offers are: the higher the number, the more often a level-30 table offers the top-tier enchantment rather than a weak one. Carrot on a Stick does not stack — each one occupies an inventory slot of its own.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make Carrot on a Stick in Minecraft?

Carrot on a Stick is crafted from Fishing Rod and Carrot.

What is the stack size of Carrot on a Stick?

Carrot on a Stick does not stack at all. Every one you carry takes an inventory slot of its own, which is the practical limit on how many you take on a trip.

How much durability does Carrot on a Stick have?

Carrot on a Stick has 25 durability.

Can Carrot on a Stick be enchanted?

Yes — 3 enchantments apply to it, at an enchanting table with fifteen bookshelves, or from an enchanted book on an anvil. Mending is usually the one worth hunting for, because it removes the repair cost entirely.
