Dungeon (Monster Room)

Dungeon (Monster Room)

OverworldCommon

Overview

A dungeon is worth more alive than dead, and new players almost always destroy theirs by reflex. The mossy cobblestone room contains a monster spawner and one or two chests, and the spawner is the single most useful block in the early game: leave it running behind a wall with a one-block gap and it produces experience and drops on its own, indefinitely, which is how most players get their first thirty enchanting levels. Killing it is a one-off. Handling one safely comes down to light. Since 1.18 hostile mobs need light level 0 to spawn, and that applies to spawners too, so a single torch placed on the spawner block shuts it down completely while you empty the chests. Do that before you step into the room, because the spawner fires whenever a player is within 16 blocks and a dark dungeon will already be holding whatever accumulated in it before you arrived. The chests are the best early loot table in the game for one specific reason: saddles, Enchanted Golden Apples, name tags, the 13 and Cat music discs, and horse armour in all three metals. None of those can be crafted.

A permanent experience and mob-drop farm if you keep the spawner, plus chest loot that cannot be obtained by crafting: saddles, horse armour, name tags, music discs, enchanted books and golden apples. The mossy cobblestone itself is worth mining for building.

A small cobblestone-and-mossy-cobblestone room with a mob spawner in the centre and one or two chests against the walls. The spawner produces zombies, skeletons or spiders depending on the dungeon, and it fires whenever a player is within sixteen blocks, so approach with a light source and place torches on the spawner immediately to shut it down. Left running, a dungeon spawner is the simplest mob farm in the game and the best early experience source, which is why many players keep one alive rather than destroying it.

It is common in the Overworld, and it generates underground, anywhere from bedrock level up to just below the surface.

How to get it

Dungeons are common underground at any depth from bedrock up to just below the surface, in every Overworld biome. Listening is the fastest method — mob noises through a wall with no cave in sight usually means a spawner within 16 blocks — and a cave system explored for 20 minutes will normally hit one.

Tips

  • Torch the spawner before entering, not after. One light source stops it dead while you loot at your leisure.
  • Keep the spawner instead of breaking it: walled off with a water channel it becomes the cheapest experience farm you will ever build.
  • Creepers wander in from adjoining caves, so seal the side passages before you start building anything permanent around the room.
  • Skeleton dungeons give bones and arrows, zombie dungeons give iron and carrots, spider dungeons give string — choose which to keep accordingly.

Version notes

Present since 1.0.0 and barely changed since. The 1.18 light-level rule — hostile spawns need light 0 rather than 7 — is the one change that matters, because it made a single torch enough to disable a spawner.

Properties

It generates in the Overworld, which is the only dimension with a day-night cycle and weather, and the one every distance in the game is measured against. In a world with cheats on, /locate structure minecraft:dungeon gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, an explorer map from a cartographer villager is the reliable route for the structures that have one; everything else is exploration.

Notable loot

Its loot includes Saddle, Golden Apple, Enchanted Book, Name Tag, Music Disc — 13, Music Disc — Cat, Iron Horse Armor, Golden Horse Armor, Diamond Horse Armor, Bucket, and Redstone Dust. These are the notable entries rather than the full loot table — the common filler (bread, coal, iron nuggets) is omitted, and in some structures the best of it comes from a vault or a spawner rather than a chest.

Mobs found here

Zombie, Skeleton, and Spider generate here. Several of them spawn nowhere else, which is usually the reason to make the trip.

What to watch out for

3 things to prepare for before you go in:

  • Spawner floods the room in seconds if you approach unlit
  • Mobs already accumulated in the dark before you arrive
  • Creepers wandering in from adjacent caves

Frequently asked questions

Does a torch on a spawner still disable it?

Yes. Since 1.18 hostile mobs require light level 0, and spawners honour their mob's spawn conditions, so a single torch on or beside the spawner stops it producing anything.

How close do you have to be for a spawner to activate?

Within 16 blocks. Step outside that radius and it goes dormant, which is what makes an AFK platform just outside the range a usable off switch.

Should you break a dungeon spawner?

Only if you have no use for experience. A working spawner is a renewable farm; broken, it is a handful of cobblestone and gone for good.

How do I find Dungeon (Monster Room)?
