Overview
Iron Horse Armor is the entry point to keeping a horse alive, and horses die embarrassingly easily without it. Equipped through the horse's inventory screen — open it while riding by pressing the inventory key — it adds 5 armour points to the animal, which cuts incoming damage by roughly a fifth and is often the difference between a skeleton volley being survivable and your mount collapsing under you at night. Horse armour has no durability at all: it never wears out, never needs repair, and can be taken off and moved to another horse whenever you like, so one piece serves for the life of a stable. It cannot be crafted, which is the part that catches people out; iron horse armour comes from loot chests, most reliably from villages, dungeons, mineshafts, desert temples and nether fortresses. It fits horses only — donkeys, mules and camels cannot wear it, and llamas use carpets instead. If you are riding anywhere at night, armour the horse before you armour yourself. A mount that survives the ride home is worth far more than the five points suggest on paper.
Giving a horse 5 armour points so it survives skeleton arrows and a fall on a night ride — protection that never wears out and moves between mounts freely.
Iron Horse Armor is one of the 4 variants of this shape in the game. What changes between them is the material, and with it the hardness, the drops, the durability and the recipe — so every figure on this page is this variant's own. Diamond Horse Armor is the same shape in a different material.
Iron Horse Armor is an armour item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It does not stack — each one takes its own slot. Chest loot in Dungeon (Monster Room) can contain it.
The one thing it makes is Iron Nugget.
How to get it
Not craftable. It generates in village, dungeon, mineshaft, desert temple, stronghold and nether fortress chests; a nether fortress chest has roughly a 15% chance of one, which is the most reliable single source.
Tips
- Open the horse's inventory while mounted with the inventory key; the armour slot is on the left of the screen.
- Horse armour has no durability, so a single piece protects every horse you ever own in turn.
- Only horses can wear it — donkeys and mules take a chest instead, and llamas take a carpet.
- Name the horse with a Name Tag as well; armour will not stop it despawning if it is untamed.
