Golden Horse Armor sits between iron and diamond at 7 armour points, and unlike gold equipment for players it carries no durability penalty whatsoever — horse armour never wears out, so the usual argument against gold simply does not apply. That makes it a straightforwardly good find: a 40% improvement in protection over iron for a piece you will never have to repair or replace. It is loot only, appearing in the same chest pool as the other tiers, with nether fortresses, desert temples, dungeons and mineshafts as the usual sources. Cosmetically it is the most distinctive of the four, giving the horse a bright yellow caparison that reads well from a distance, which matters more than it should when you are trying to find your horse in a field. As with every tier, it fits horses only and is equipped through the mount's inventory screen. Since armour cannot be enchanted on a horse, the tier you find is the entire decision — so keep upgrading as better pieces turn up in chests. Finding one early is one of the quiet pleasures of a desert temple raid.

- Gold's usual durability weakness does not exist here, because horse armour has no durability to lose.
- Swap it onto whichever horse you are currently riding; the piece is never consumed by being equipped.
