Overview
Leather Horse Armor is the only tier you can craft, and it is the only one you can dye, which makes it far more interesting than its 3 armour points suggest. Seven leather on a crafting grid produces a piece, and a cauldron of dyed water — or a crafting-grid dye application — colours it in any of the standard shades and their mixes, exactly like leather player armour. For anyone building a stable, a server team or a horse-racing track, that means a colour-coded string of mounts rather than five identical brown horses. Protection-wise it is the weakest of the four, and 3 armour points is not much against a skeleton, but it is infinitely better than nothing and it is available on day two rather than after a temple raid. Like every horse armour it has no durability and is never consumed, so a dyed set stays exactly as you made it. Wash the colour out in a water cauldron if you change the scheme. It is the friendliest item in the game for anyone who cares what their stable looks like.

How to get it
Craft 1 from 7 Leather — the only horse armour with a recipe. Cows drop 0 to 2 leather each, so a small cow farm supplies a full stable's worth in a session.
Tips
- Dye it in a crafting grid or a water cauldron; the colour is cosmetic and does not change the 3 armour points.
- A water cauldron washes the dye out again, so a colour scheme can be changed as often as you like.
- Breed cows for leather rather than hunting them; two wheat starts a pair and the calves grow into a supply.
- Upgrade to iron or better the moment a chest provides it — 3 points is a stopgap, not a solution.
Version notes
Leather horse armour became craftable in 1.14; before that, like the other three tiers, it was loot-only.
