Overview

An Iron Helmet is the first head protection worth wearing, at 2 armour points and 165 durability for five ingots you will find on the first proper mining trip. Its practical value early on is not the number but the coverage: an unhelmeted player takes full damage from falling gravel and anvils, and drowning damage arrives faster with nothing on. It is also the cheapest way to start using Respiration, which matters far sooner than most players expect — shipwrecks, ocean ruins and flooded caves all turn up long before diamonds do. Iron armour's enchantability of 9 is the lowest of the common tiers, so rolls at an enchanting table are weaker than gold or leather would give, but the durability makes up for it. The sensible early sequence is iron chestplate, iron leggings, then helmet and boots, upgrading each to diamond as the material appears. Repair costs a single ingot, and a helmet damaged in a cave is fixed on the way past a furnace rather than replaced. It is the piece that makes a starter kit feel like equipment rather than improvisation.

Basic head protection from day two onwards, and the cheapest platform for Respiration when the first shipwreck or flooded cave turns up before diamonds do.

Iron Helmet is one of the 7 variants of this shape in the game. What changes between them is the material, and with it the hardness, the drops, the durability and the recipe — so every figure on this page is this variant's own. Chainmail Helmet is the same shape in a different material.

In Minecraft, Iron Helmet is an armour item. Expect 165 uses before it breaks. Repair it on an anvil with Iron Ingot, or combine two damaged copies.

It accepts enchantments at an enchanting table or anvil. Every copy occupies a full inventory slot. It is crafted from Iron Ingot.

It goes into exactly one recipe: Iron Nugget.

About the iron armour set

How to get it

Craft 1 from 5 Iron Ingots. Iron ore is common between Y 15 and Y -24 and smelts one ingot per ore, so a single mining session covers a full set of four pieces.

Tips

  • Wear something on the head before exploring caves; falling gravel and anvils deal full damage to a bare skull.
  • Iron armour's enchantability of 9 is the lowest of the common tiers, so save serious enchanting for diamond.
  • One ingot repairs a quarter of the bar on an anvil, and a grindstone repair costs nothing but the second helmet.
  • Chainmail found in loot has identical durability to iron, so an iron helmet is a fine stand-in until then.

Properties

Iron Helmet lasts 165 uses before it breaks, and Iron Ingot repairs it on an anvil. Two worn copies can also be merged, on an anvil or a grindstone. Unbreaking III roughly quadruples the lifespan, and Mending replaces the repair cost with experience. Worn, it adds 2 armour points. Its enchantability of 9 decides how good the enchanting table's offers are: the higher the number, the more often a level-30 table offers the top-tier enchantment rather than a weak one. Iron Helmet does not stack — each one occupies an inventory slot of its own.

How it compares to the rest of the set

Every tier of helmet in the game, side by side, so the trade-off is visible in one place: Iron Helmet sits 3 of 6.

The armour column is the points each piece adds and the toughness column is what blunts a heavy hit. Gold looks cheap on paper and wears out fastest; Netherite Helmet is the end of the line at 407 durability.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make Iron Helmet in Minecraft?

Iron Helmet is crafted from Iron Ingot.

What is the stack size of Iron Helmet?

Iron Helmet does not stack at all. Every one you carry takes an inventory slot of its own, which is the practical limit on how many you take on a trip.

How much durability does Iron Helmet have?

Iron Helmet has 165 durability, and can be repaired on an anvil with Iron Ingot.

Can Iron Helmet be enchanted?

Yes — 10 enchantments apply to it, at an enchanting table with fifteen bookshelves, or from an enchanted book on an anvil. Mending is usually the one worth hunting for, because it removes the repair cost entirely.
