Overview
A Diamond Helmet gives 3 armour points and 363 durability, and it is where most players' underwater kit finally comes together. The head slot is the only place Respiration and Aqua Affinity can go, and diamond is the first tier durable enough to justify spending 30 levels on them. Respiration III adds about 45 seconds of breath and slows drowning damage; Aqua Affinity removes the fivefold mining penalty underwater, which is the difference between digging out an ocean monument in an afternoon and giving up. For land use, Protection IV on the helmet is a small but real addition to a set's total, and Unbreaking III with Mending makes it permanent. Two diamonds' worth of value sit in the enchantments rather than the plate itself, which is why the standard advice is to enchant the diamond helmet properly rather than waiting for netherite — the smithing upgrade preserves every enchantment, so nothing done now is wasted later. Five diamonds is the crafting cost, and a helmet is usually the last piece a new player makes. Enchant it well and the ocean stops being a place you visit with potions in hand.
The underwater slot: Respiration and Aqua Affinity for monument raids and conduit builds, plus Protection for the rest of a set's day-to-day work. Nothing else opens up the ocean this cheaply.
Diamond Helmet is one of the 7 variants of this shape in the game. What changes between them is the material, and with it the hardness, the drops, the durability and the recipe — so every figure on this page is this variant's own. Chainmail Helmet is the same shape in a different material.
Diamond Helmet is an armour item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It has 363 points of durability. Use Diamond on an anvil to repair it.
Enchanting it is possible and generally recommended. It does not stack — each one takes its own slot. You make it with Diamond.
The one thing it makes is Netherite Helmet.
About the diamond armour set
How to get it
Craft 1 from 5 Diamonds. Its 363 durability is more than double an iron helmet's 165, and 1 diamond on an anvil restores roughly a quarter of the bar.
Tips
- Enchant it now rather than waiting for netherite — the upgrade later carries every enchantment across intact.
- Aqua Affinity has no levels: one application removes the underwater mining penalty completely.
- A Conduit does the same job for a fixed area, so a helmet with Respiration is for travel, not for a base.
- Diamond's enchantability of 10 is lower than iron's, so use a full 15-bookshelf table for the best rolls.
Properties
Diamond Helmet lasts 363 uses before it breaks, and Diamond repairs it on an anvil. Two worn copies can also be merged, on an anvil or a grindstone. Unbreaking III roughly quadruples the lifespan, and Mending replaces the repair cost with experience. Worn, it adds 3 armour points, and 2 armour toughness, which is what keeps heavy hits from cutting straight through. Its enchantability of 10 decides how good the enchanting table's offers are: the higher the number, the more often a level-30 table offers the top-tier enchantment rather than a weak one. Diamond Helmet does not stack — each one occupies an inventory slot of its own.

How it compares to the rest of the set
Every tier of helmet in the game, side by side, so the trade-off is visible in one place: Diamond Helmet sits 5 of 6.
The armour column is the points each piece adds and the toughness column is what blunts a heavy hit. Gold looks cheap on paper and wears out fastest; Netherite Helmet is the end of the line at 407 durability.
| Item | Durability | Armour | Armour toughness | Enchantability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leather Cap | 55 | 1 | — | 15 |
| Chainmail Helmet | 165 | 2 | — | 12 |
| Iron Helmet | 165 | 2 | — | 9 |
| Golden Helmet | 77 | 2 | — | 25 |
| Diamond Helmet | 363 | 3 | 2 | 10 |

Crafting recipe
Enchantments it can take
10 enchantments can be applied to Diamond Helmet: Aqua Affinity, Curse of Binding, Blast Protection, Fire Protection, Mending, Projectile Protection, Protection, Respiration, Thorns, and Unbreaking.
Curse of Binding and Mending are treasure enchantments and never appear at an enchanting table — they come from loot chests, fishing or villager trades only.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make Diamond Helmet in Minecraft?
Diamond Helmet is crafted from Diamond.
What is the stack size of Diamond Helmet?
Diamond Helmet does not stack at all. Every one you carry takes an inventory slot of its own, which is the practical limit on how many you take on a trip.
How much durability does Diamond Helmet have?
Diamond Helmet has 363 durability, and can be repaired on an anvil with Diamond.
Can Diamond Helmet be enchanted?
Yes — 10 enchantments apply to it, at an enchanting table with fifteen bookshelves, or from an enchanted book on an anvil. Mending is usually the one worth hunting for, because it removes the repair cost entirely.
The rest of the set
Diamond Helmet is one of 7 variants of the same shape. The others are made from different materials, so their numbers differ:
