Overview

A Diamond Chestplate is the largest single jump in survivability available in the game: 8 armour points from one item, 528 durability, and armour toughness that softens the heaviest hits rather than just absorbing them. Getting one is the moment a world stops being dangerous in the ordinary way — creepers become survivable, skeleton volleys become an annoyance, and the Nether becomes a place you can plan around. Eight diamonds is the most expensive craft in the tier and it is the right first purchase, ahead of a sword, because damage you do not take beats damage you deal in almost every situation a new player dies in. Protection IV is the standard enchantment, with Unbreaking III and Mending making it permanent. Thorns III is a personal choice, since it costs durability quickly. The one thing to plan for is the Elytra conflict later: both live in the chest slot, so an end-game kit carries the chestplate and swaps to wings for travel rather than choosing between them. No other single craft changes a world's difficulty as sharply as this one does, which is why it deserves the first eight diamonds you find.

Cutting incoming damage more than any other item you can wear or hold — the piece that turns a dangerous cave into an ordinary one.

Diamond Chestplate is one of the 6 variants of this shape in the game. What changes between them is the material, and with it the hardness, the drops, the durability and the recipe — so every figure on this page is this variant's own. Chainmail Chestplate is the same shape in a different material.

Diamond Chestplate is an armour item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It has 528 points of durability. Use Diamond on an anvil to repair it.

Enchanting it is possible and generally recommended. It does not stack — each one takes its own slot. Chest loot in Woodland Mansion and End City can contain it.

The recipe calls for Diamond. Its only crafting use is Netherite Chestplate.

About the diamond armour set

How to get it

Craft 1 from 8 Diamonds — the single most expensive item in the diamond tier. Its 528 durability is more than twice the 240 of an iron chestplate.

Tips

  • Craft the chestplate before the sword; not dying is worth more than killing faster in every early fight.
  • Protection IV plus Unbreaking III with Mending is the standard build and needs no further planning.
  • One diamond repairs about a quarter of the durability on an anvil, so keep a couple in the ender chest.
  • The armour calculator shows exactly how much each piece contributes to your total.

Properties

Diamond Chestplate lasts 528 uses before it breaks, and Diamond repairs it on an anvil. Two worn copies can also be merged, on an anvil or a grindstone. Unbreaking III roughly quadruples the lifespan, and Mending replaces the repair cost with experience. Worn, it adds 8 armour points, and 2 armour toughness, which is what keeps heavy hits from cutting straight through. Its enchantability of 10 decides how good the enchanting table's offers are: the higher the number, the more often a level-30 table offers the top-tier enchantment rather than a weak one. Diamond Chestplate does not stack — each one occupies an inventory slot of its own.

How it compares to the rest of the set

Every tier of chestplate in the game, side by side, so the trade-off is visible in one place: Diamond Chestplate sits 5 of 6.

The armour column is the points each piece adds and the toughness column is what blunts a heavy hit. Gold looks cheap on paper and wears out fastest; Netherite Chestplate is the end of the line at 592 durability.

Diamond Chestplate

Found in

Diamond Chestplate is in the loot tables of Woodland Mansion and End City.

  • Woodland Mansion — An enormous three-storey house of dark oak and cobblestone, generated only in dark forests and typically tens of thousands of blocks from spawn, which makes a woodland explorer map from a cartographer villager the practical way to find one.
  • End City — A tower complex of purpur blocks and end stone bricks on the outer End islands, reachable only through an end gateway after killing the dragon.

Enchantments it can take

8 enchantments can be applied to Diamond Chestplate: Curse of Binding, Blast Protection, Fire Protection, Mending, Projectile Protection, Protection, Thorns, and Unbreaking.

Curse of Binding and Mending are treasure enchantments and never appear at an enchanting table — they come from loot chests, fishing or villager trades only.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make Diamond Chestplate in Minecraft?

Diamond Chestplate is crafted from Diamond.

What is the stack size of Diamond Chestplate?

Diamond Chestplate does not stack at all. Every one you carry takes an inventory slot of its own, which is the practical limit on how many you take on a trip.

How much durability does Diamond Chestplate have?

Diamond Chestplate has 528 durability, and can be repaired on an anvil with Diamond.

Can Diamond Chestplate be enchanted?

Yes — 8 enchantments apply to it, at an enchanting table with fifteen bookshelves, or from an enchanted book on an anvil. Mending is usually the one worth hunting for, because it removes the repair cost entirely.
