Its toughness value reduces how badly very heavy hits — a ravager, a charged creeper, a wither skull — cut through the armour bar, and that is what separates netherite from diamond in practice rather than the identical 8 points. The perennial decision is the chestplate against Elytra, because both occupy the same slot. Most players carry the wings in a hotbar slot or a shulker box and swap at the moment of use. Thorns III on the chestplate deals damage back to attackers, though it costs durability quickly; Protection IV and Unbreaking III with Mending is the standard build.
