Overview
A smithing table does two jobs and neither of them is ordinary crafting. The first is the netherite upgrade: put a diamond tool, weapon or armour piece in one slot, a netherite upgrade smithing template in another and a netherite ingot in the third, and the item becomes netherite while keeping every enchantment, its name and its remaining durability. That template comes only from bastion remnant chests, and it is consumed by the upgrade, so duplicating a template with 7 diamonds and a block of netherrack before you spend it is a habit worth forming. The second job, added in 1.20, is armour trims: a trim template, an armour piece and a material — iron, gold, copper, lapis, emerald, redstone, diamond, netherite, amethyst or quartz — produce a purely cosmetic pattern in that material's colour. Trims are per-piece, so a full set can carry four different patterns, and a trim can be overwritten by applying a different one — though never removed entirely. The table is also the toolsmith villager's job site block, which makes it worth placing beside an unemployed villager for the diamond tool trades.

Smithing Table is a functional block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Smithing Table. Its hardness of 2.5 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.
Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. A blast resistance of 2.5 means a single creeper will clear it away. It stacks to 64.
You make it with Iron Ingot and Oak Planks. No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Craft it from 2 iron ingots and 4 wooden planks. Smithing tables also generate in toolsmith houses in villages, which is where most players get their first one for free.
Tips
- Duplicate a smithing template before using it: 1 template, 7 diamonds and 1 block of the structure's material make a copy.
- The upgrade keeps every enchantment and the item's name, so upgrade your best diamond gear rather than fresh pieces.
- Armour trims are cosmetic only; they never change protection values, no matter which material you use.
- Netherite gear floats in lava and does not burn, which is worth the 4 ancient debris on a pickaxe alone.

The smithing table became netherite-upgrade-only in 1.20, when armour trims were added and the old tool-upgrade recipes were removed.
How long it takes to break
Smithing Table has a hardness of 2.5. By hand that is 3.8 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.45 seconds.
You are looking at 0.65 seconds on iron and 0.5 on diamond — the iron step is where the time actually falls.
Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.
Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 3 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Properties
With 2.5 blast resistance Smithing Table goes down to any nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. An axe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag. As furnace fuel it burns for 15 seconds — one and a half smelting operations.
