Overview
An enchanting table converts experience levels and lapis lazuli into enchantments, and it is the gateway block for essentially every piece of good gear you will ever own. It offers three options at a time, each with a level cost and a lapis cost of 1 to 3, and the enchantments themselves are partly hidden until you commit — the Standard Galactic Alphabet text is decoration, but the single enchantment shown underneath is real and the rest are a surprise. The important mechanic is bookshelves. Each bookshelf placed exactly 2 blocks away from the table, at the same height or one above, with an air gap in between, raises the maximum offered level; 15 bookshelves is the cap and unlocks the level-30 tier, which is where Efficiency V, Protection IV, Fortune III and Sharpness V come from. Fewer than 15 shelves is not merely slower, it makes the best enchantments impossible from the table at all. Enchanting an item rerolls the other two slots, and every enchant consumes the levels shown even if you are above them. Books can be enchanted the same way, which is how you bank an enchantment for an anvil later.

Enchanting Table is a functional block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. Enchanting Table is made at a crafting table. Expect to wait: its hardness of 5 is well above average.
Mine it with a wooden pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Broken correctly, it drops itself. It glows faintly at light level 7.
At 1,200 blast resistance it is a genuinely blast-proof building material. It stacks to 64. You make it with Book, Diamond, and Obsidian.
No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Craft it from 4 obsidian, 2 diamonds and 1 book. Surround it with 15 bookshelves at a 2-block distance with air between to unlock level 30, which needs 45 books and 90 planks in total.
Tips
- Leave a 1-block air gap between the table and each bookshelf; a torch or a block in the gap cancels that shelf entirely.
- Enchant a book rather than the item when you want a specific result, then apply it with an anvil at a controlled cost.
- Every enchant rerolls the other 2 offers, so spend a cheap 1-level enchant on junk to refresh a bad set of options.

How long it takes to break
Hardness 5 puts Enchanting Table at 25 seconds a block bare-handed, or 0.85 seconds with the right tool at netherite tier.
Iron takes 1.3 seconds against diamond's 0.95, so the upgrade worth making for this block is the one to diamond.
A weaker tool still breaks it, but anything under wooden returns nothing — you spend the time and lose the drop, which is how most veins get wasted.
The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3.4 times the unenchanted rate.

Properties
Blast resistance on Enchanting Table is 1,200, enough to shrug off a creeper or point-blank TNT. It stops light entirely and gives off light level 7. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. A pickaxe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag.
