An enchanting table surrounded by 15 bookshelves offers level-30 enchantments, which is the only tier worth using on gear you intend to keep. Each level-30 enchant costs 3 experience levels and 3 lapis lazuli — not 30 levels, though you must have 30 levels to use the slot.
Building the table
The table itself is 4 obsidian, 2 diamonds and 1 book.
The bookshelves are the fiddly part. Each shelf counts only if:
- It sits exactly 2 blocks away from the table, horizontally or diagonally
- It is at the same height as the table or one block above it
- The block between the shelf and the table is air or another transparent block
The standard layout is a 5×5 square with the table in the centre, bookshelves filling the perimeter except the four corners, in two layers. That is 15 shelves and gives full power. Leave one gap in the ring so you can walk in.
Fifteen bookshelves cost 45 books and 90 planks. Forty-five books is 45 leather and 135 paper, which is 135 sugar cane. Start a sugar cane farm early; it is the bottleneck.
Chiselled bookshelves provide no enchanting power. They are storage and decoration only.
Bookshelves and maximum level
| Bookshelves | Approximate top-slot level |
|---|---|
| 0 | 8 |
| 5 | 15 |
| 10 | 23 |
| 15 | 30 |
Anything below 15 is a waste of a session. Fifteen is the cap; a sixteenth shelf does nothing.
The cost of enchanting
| Slot | Levels required | Levels spent | Lapis spent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | 1+ | 1 | 1 |
| Middle | 2+ | 2 | 2 |
| Bottom | 30 (for a level-30 result) | 3 | 3 |
This is the mechanic most people misunderstand. Reaching level 30 costs 1,395 total experience, but spending it on a bottom-slot enchant costs only 3 levels. You drop from level 30 to 27 and can enchant again almost immediately.
Because of that, the correct habit is: get to 30, enchant, get back to 30, enchant again. Never enchant at level 8 on gear you care about.
Enchantability, and why gold and books behave differently
Every material has an enchantability value that biases how many and how strong the enchantments you get are. Higher is better.
| Material | Enchantability |
|---|---|
| Gold | 22 |
| Wood, leather, netherite | 15 |
| Iron (tools) | 14 |
| Chainmail | 12 |
| Diamond | 10 |
| Stone | 5 |
| Book | 1 |
Golden tools pull noticeably better enchantments than diamond ones at the same level. That is the basis of a common trick: enchant cheap golden items or books, then move the result onto your real gear with an anvil.
Books have the lowest enchantability of all, but they only ever receive one enchantment per roll, which makes them predictable — and predictability is worth more than raw power when you are building a specific set.
Treasure enchantments you cannot get from a table
These never appear at an enchanting table, no matter how many bookshelves you have:
- Mending — villager trades, fishing, loot chests
- Frost Walker — villager trades, fishing, loot chests
- Soul Speed — piglin bartering, bastion chests
- Swift Sneak — ancient city chests only
- Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing — loot and trades
Mending is the one that matters. A librarian villager with a Mending book trade is worth more than a diamond vein.
The enchantments worth having
Pickaxe
| Enchantment | Max | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Efficiency | V | Mining speed; the difference is enormous on deepslate |
| Fortune | III | Averages 2.2× on diamonds, coal, lapis, redstone |
| Unbreaking | III | Roughly quadruples effective durability |
| Mending | I | Repairs from mining experience |
Keep a second pickaxe with Silk Touch for glass, ice, spawners and amethyst. Silk Touch and Fortune are mutually exclusive.
Sword
- Sharpness V — 3 extra damage against everything
- Looting III — more drops, and the only way to farm wither skeleton skulls at a tolerable rate
- Unbreaking III and Mending
- Sweeping Edge III for crowds
- Fire Aspect II is a trap in survival — it burns the drops off mobs you wanted cooked, and sets you on fire in close quarters
Keep a separate Smite V sword for the Wither and undead farms; Smite adds 12.5 damage against undead where Sharpness adds 3.
Armour
- Protection IV on all four pieces — 16 EPF, a 64% reduction
- Feather Falling IV on boots — worth 12 EPF against fall damage alone
- Unbreaking III and Mending on everything
- Respiration III and Aqua Affinity on a helmet for underwater work
- Depth Strider III on boots if you spend time in water
Bow and crossbow
- Power V, Infinity, Unbreaking III on a bow
- Flame and Punch II situationally
- Infinity and Mending are mutually exclusive — Infinity for a general bow, Mending for one you will repair
Tools people forget
An Efficiency V shovel makes gravel clearing instant. Luck of the Sea III and Lure III on a fishing rod turn fishing into a source of enchanted books.
A practical routine
- Build the 15-shelf ring and a mob or ore experience source.
- Enchant books at level 30 until you get the enchantments you want. Books cost 1 book plus 3 lapis and 3 levels each.
- Combine books on an anvil, cheapest pairs first.
- Apply the finished combination to your gear in as few anvil operations as possible.
This costs more books than enchanting the item directly, but it means your diamond pickaxe never receives an enchantment you did not choose, and it keeps the item's anvil penalty low.
Rerolling the offers
The three offers shown are determined by an enchantment seed that changes whenever you enchant anything. If none of the three offers appeal, enchant a cheap item — a wooden shovel or a spare book — in the top slot for 1 level and 1 lapis. The offers reshuffle.
Frequently asked questions
How much lapis do I need?
Three per level-30 enchant, so a full set of gear enchanted from books will consume 50 or more. Lapis ore peaks around Y=0 and Fortune multiplies the drop, so one deliberate trip to that level usually covers a whole world's enchanting.
Why do I keep getting the same enchantment offers?
Because the enchantment seed has not changed. It rerolls when you successfully enchant an item, so enchant something cheap in the top slot to shuffle it. Moving to a different table does not help — the seed belongs to the player.
Can I enchant netherite gear directly?
Yes, but there is rarely a reason to. Upgrading a diamond item to netherite at a smithing table preserves all its enchantments, its name and its durability percentage. Enchant in diamond, then upgrade. Netherite's enchantability of 15 is higher than diamond's 10, so if you are enchanting the item at the table rather than applying books, doing it after the upgrade gives slightly better rolls.
Is it better to enchant books or items?
Books, for anything you care about. Enchanting an item directly is cheaper and gives more enchantments per roll, but you take whatever the table offers. Books let you choose, and combining them on an anvil in the right order keeps the final item's prior work penalty low enough to add Mending later.
Do I lose the experience if the enchantment is bad?
Yes. The levels and lapis are consumed when you click, and there is no preview beyond the single enchantment name shown on hover. That single name is a genuine hint though — the offer always includes it, so if the bottom slot shows Fortune III you will get Fortune III plus whatever else the roll adds.
