Overview
A chiseled bookshelf holds six books in six visible slots, and unlike an ordinary bookshelf it is a real container rather than a decoration. Put in books, book-and-quills, written books or enchanted books and each occupies one slot, visible from the front so you can see at a glance which slots are filled. The redstone behaviour is the interesting part: a comparator reads which slot was last inserted into or removed from, outputting 1 to 6 accordingly. That gives you a six-state switch operated by putting a book in a particular slot, which is the neatest hidden door mechanism in the game — a library wall where taking the right book opens a passage is a build that has existed as a joke since Minecraft launched and only became possible in 1.20. Note that a chiseled bookshelf does not count towards an enchanting table's bookshelf requirement, no matter how many books are in it; for that you need ordinary bookshelves. It is also the only way to store books in a way that looks like a library instead of a chest.

A blast resistance of 1.5 means a single creeper will clear it away. It stacks to 64. You make it with Oak Planks and Oak Slab.
No recipe takes it as an ingredient.
How to get it
Craft it from 6 wooden planks and 3 wooden slabs of any type. It also generates in some village libraries and in trail ruins, though crafting is almost always faster than finding one.
Tips
- The comparator reads the last slot changed, not the total count, so a specific book in a specific slot is a key.
- It does not count towards the 15 bookshelves an enchanting table needs — use plain bookshelves for that.
- The front face shows which of the 6 slots are filled, so a partly stocked shelf is readable at a glance.
- Hoppers cannot insert into it, which is deliberate: a chiseled bookshelf is manual storage by design.

Chiseled Bookshelf sits at hardness 1.5: 2.3 seconds per block with your fists, 0.25 with the correct netherite tool.
Iron manages 0.4 seconds and diamond 0.3, which makes diamond the tier that changes how this block feels.
The drop does not depend on the tool — bare hands work as well as anything — so the table below is purely about speed.
The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 2.5 times the unenchanted rate.

Properties
Chiseled Bookshelf resists blasts at 1.5, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits none of its own. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. Flammable, at encouragement 5 and burn 20: build with it away from lava, and do not use it as a wall you care about. The fastest tool for it is an axe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for. As furnace fuel it burns for 15 seconds — one and a half smelting operations.
