Oak Planks

Overview

Oak planks are the most-used crafting ingredient in Minecraft. One log gives four, and from planks come the crafting table, sticks, chests, barrels, doors, trapdoors, signs, boats, bowls, bookshelves, beds, note blocks, jukeboxes, item frames, and the stairs, slabs, fences and fence gates of the oak set — which means a single tree covers most of a first day. As a building material oak planks are the default warm mid-brown that most players' first house is made of, and their ubiquity is precisely why experienced builders reach for spruce, dark oak or pale oak instead when they want something to look deliberate. Planks have a hardness of 2 and a blast resistance of 3, so they are quick to break and offer no protection at all against a creeper. They burn: fire spreads across a plank structure readily, which matters near lava, in a savanna where it never rains, and anywhere a lightning rod is absent. Every wood type's planks are interchangeable in recipes, so a mixed pile still crafts a chest. A stack of planks in the inventory is the most generally useful thing a new player can carry, because almost every emergency — a shelter wall, a door, a boat, a spare tool handle — is solved from it.

About the oak set

Oak is the wood every player meets first, and the whole set behaves the same way: planks, stairs, slabs, fences, doors, trapdoors, signs, buttons and pressure plates share one hardness of 2, one blast resistance of 3, and one rule — an axe is faster but never required, and every piece drops itself. What separates the woods is colour and, for two of them, availability: oak and birch generate in the starting biomes, while cherry, mangrove and pale oak need a specific biome to be found at all. Because the recipes are identical across the set, anything you learn here transfers: four planks make a crafting table, six make a door, six make three trapdoors. The one place they differ is fuel — every wooden item burns in a furnace for 15 seconds, and a set of stairs is worth exactly as much fuel as the planks it was made from, so smelting with leftover stairs is never wasteful.

How to get it

Craft 4 planks from 1 log or stripped log of any oak variety. Planks also generate in villages, mineshafts, shipwrecks and woodland mansions, where they can be recovered with an axe.

Tips

Every wood type's planks work in the same recipes, so a mixed pile still makes a chest or a crafting table.
Planks burn readily, so keep them at least 4 blocks away from lava or a fire source in a savanna build.
2 planks make 4 sticks, which is the cheapest step in the game and worth doing before you leave a tree.
A stonecutter does not work on wood, so plank stairs and slabs still cost the usual crafting-grid ratio.

How long it takes to break

Oak Planks has a hardness of 2. By hand that is 3 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.35 seconds.

You are looking at 0.5 seconds on iron and 0.4 on diamond — the iron step is where the time actually falls.

Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.

Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 3.5 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Properties

Oak Planks resists blasts at 3, which usually is not enough when something explodes nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits none of its own. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. It renews, so a single world will never run out. Fire takes to it quickly — encouragement 5, burn 20 — which makes it a poor neighbour for lava or a lit campfire. The fastest tool for it is an axe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for. As furnace fuel it burns for 15 seconds — one and a half smelting operations.
