Oak Boat

Overview

An Oak Boat is the cheapest speed upgrade in the game: five planks buys travel at about 8 blocks per second on open water, against a sprint of 5.6 on land. It seats you plus one passenger, which is the standard trick for moving a villager — push one into a boat, ride it home, and no fence, minecart or rail is needed. Boats also work on ice, and there they are astonishing: a boat on blue ice moves at roughly 40 blocks per second, faster than an Elytra in level flight, which is why long-distance ice highways in the Nether are built out of blue ice and a boat rather than rails. On land a boat still slides slowly, and it breaks into its planks only when destroyed by a mob or a fall — hitting it yourself returns the boat item, so nothing is wasted. Boats take no fall damage themselves and protect their passenger from it, which is how players descend cliffs safely with no water bucket, and a boat placed on the ground is also a perfectly good trap for pushing a hostile mob into.

Crossing water and ice quickly, moving villagers and animals to a new location, descending cliffs without fall damage, and parking a mob in place so it cannot chase you.

Oak Boat is a transport item in Minecraft 1.21.4. It does not stack — each one takes its own slot. You make it with Oak Planks.

The one thing it makes is Oak Boat with Chest.

About the oak set

Oak is the wood every player meets first, and the whole set behaves the same way: planks, stairs, slabs, fences, doors, trapdoors, signs, buttons and pressure plates share one hardness of 2, one blast resistance of 3, and one rule — an axe is faster but never required, and every piece drops itself. What separates the woods is colour and, for two of them, availability: oak and birch generate in the starting biomes, while cherry, mangrove and pale oak need a specific biome to be found at all. Because the recipes are identical across the set, anything you learn here transfers: four planks make a crafting table, six make a door, six make three trapdoors. The one place they differ is fuel — every wooden item burns in a furnace for 15 seconds, and a set of stairs is worth exactly as much fuel as the planks it was made from, so smelting with leftover stairs is never wasteful.

How to get it

Craft 1 from 5 Oak Planks. Every wood type crafts an identical boat, and the bamboo version is a raft with a different model, so 1 tree is enough for several boats.

Tips

Blue ice under a boat gives roughly 40 blocks per second — the fastest ground travel in the game, ahead of a horse or rails.
A boat protects its rider from fall damage, so riding one off a cliff is a valid, if silly, descent method.
Push a villager into a boat to transport them; villagers cannot be leashed and this is the standard workaround.
Break a boat by hitting it and you get the boat back; letting a mob destroy it drops planks and sticks instead.
