Oak Log

Overview

An oak log is the block every Minecraft world starts with, and the first thing almost every player punches. One log crafts into four oak planks, and those planks are the base of a crafting table, sticks, a chest, a door, a boat, tool handles and half the recipes in the game — which is why the standard opening move is to cut three or four trees before doing anything else. Logs can be placed in three orientations depending on which face you build against, so a log wall can run vertically like a trunk or horizontally like a beam, and that alone makes them a staple building material rather than only a raw resource. Using an axe on a placed log strips it, producing a stripped oak log with the bark removed and a lighter, smoother texture — the standard way to get two different wood tones out of one material. Logs burn as furnace fuel for 15 seconds, or 1.5 items each, and smelt into charcoal, which does everything coal does. Oak trees also drop apples from their leaves, which no other tree does.

Minecraft classifies Oak Log as a wooden block. There is no way to craft it; you have to find it and mine it. Its hardness of 2 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.

Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. A blast resistance of 2 means a single creeper will clear it away. It stacks to 64.

Its main value is as a crafting ingredient: 6 recipes need it, Campfire, Oak Planks, Oak Wood and 3 more among them.

About the oak set

Oak is the wood every player meets first, and the whole set behaves the same way: planks, stairs, slabs, fences, doors, trapdoors, signs, buttons and pressure plates share one hardness of 2, one blast resistance of 3, and one rule — an axe is faster but never required, and every piece drops itself. What separates the woods is colour and, for two of them, availability: oak and birch generate in the starting biomes, while cherry, mangrove and pale oak need a specific biome to be found at all. Because the recipes are identical across the set, anything you learn here transfers: four planks make a crafting table, six make a door, six make three trapdoors. The one place they differ is fuel — every wooden item burns in a furnace for 15 seconds, and a set of stairs is worth exactly as much fuel as the planks it was made from, so smelting with leftover stairs is never wasteful.

How to get it

Punch or chop any oak tree; an axe is roughly 3 times faster but never required. Oak generates in forest, plains, swamp, river and dozens of other biomes, so the first tree is usually within sight of spawn.

Tips

Use an axe on a placed log to strip the bark off — that gives you 2 distinct wood tones from 1 material.
1 log smelts into 1 charcoal, which fuels 8 items exactly like coal and never needs a mine.
Logs place in 3 orientations, so build a wall against a different face to change the grain direction.
Replant a sapling every time you fell a tree; oak needs only 1 sapling and 5 blocks of headroom.

How long it takes to break

Oak Log sits at hardness 2: 3 seconds per block with your fists, 0.35 with the correct netherite tool.

Iron takes 0.5 seconds against diamond's 0.4, so the upgrade worth making for this block is the one to iron.

Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.

The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3.5 times the unenchanted rate.

Properties

Oak Log has a blast resistance of 2, so any explosion nearby destroys it. It blocks light completely and emits no light of its own. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. It is renewable, so a single world can supply an unlimited amount of it. Fire spreads to it readily (encouragement 5, burn 5), so keep it away from lava and away from anything you would rather not lose. An axe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for. As furnace fuel it burns for 15 seconds — one and a half smelting operations.
