Smoker

Overview

A smoker is the food half of the furnace split: it cooks any raw food at twice the speed of an ordinary furnace, 5 seconds instead of 10, and refuses everything that is not food. That makes it the correct block to sit beside a farm or an animal pen, since the entire output of a cow or a potato field goes through it and nothing else. Like the blast furnace it gives half the experience of a normal furnace, which almost never matters for food. The recipe is cheap — a furnace and four logs of any kind — so there is no reason to delay building one past the point where you have a furnace at all. The smoker is also the butcher villager's job site block, and a butcher buys raw meat, sweet berries and potatoes for emeralds, which is one of the easiest early emerald incomes in the game because those are exactly the things a starting farm overproduces. Aesthetically it emits smoke particles from its top when lit, which builders use as a chimney effect, and it gives off light level 13 while cooking.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Smoker is a building block. Smoker is made at a crafting table. Expect to wait: its hardness of 3.5 is well above average.

Mine it with a wooden pickaxe or better, or you get no drop at all. Broken correctly, it drops itself. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot.

The recipe calls for Oak Log and Furnace. It is not used in any crafting recipe.

How to get it

Craft it from 1 furnace and 4 logs of any wood type. Smokers also generate in butcher houses in villages, so the first one most players own is usually taken from a village rather than crafted.

Tips

• It cooks in 5 seconds against a furnace's 10, so 1 smoker keeps up with a much larger animal farm.
• It only accepts food, so keep a separate furnace for charcoal, glass and ore.
• A butcher villager buys raw meat and sweet berries for emeralds, which pays for itself in a couple of days.
• The smoke particles from a lit smoker make a convincing chimney if you build it into a roof.

How long it takes to break

At a hardness of 3.5, Smoker takes 18 seconds to punch out and 0.6 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.

An iron tool takes 0.9 seconds and a diamond one 0.7, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to iron.

The block still breaks with a weaker tool, but below wooden it yields nothing at all — the time is spent and the drop is lost, which is the single most common way players waste a vein.

Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 4 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Properties

Smoker resists blasts at 3.5, which usually is not enough when something explodes nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits none of its own. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. A pickaxe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag.
