Overview

A slime block does three separate things, and redstone builders use all of them. It bounces: anything landing on it takes no fall damage and is thrown back upward, with the height depending on how far it fell, and sneaking cancels the bounce so you can walk on it normally. It sticks: a slime block pushed by a piston drags every adjacent block along with it, up to the twelve-block piston limit, which is what makes flying machines, self-building bridges and moving platforms possible at all. And it slows: walking across the top of one is noticeably slower than walking on stone. The stickiness has one deliberate exception — slime does not stick to honey blocks — and that single rule is what allows a machine to leave part of itself behind on each cycle, which is the basis of every flying machine design. Nine slimeballs make a block and the block uncrafts back into nine, so it doubles as compact storage. Slimeballs come from slimes in swamps at night, from slime chunks below Y 40, and from baby pandas.

Flying machines and moving platforms, fall-damage-free landing pads, bounce launchers for a parkour course, and compact storage for slimeballs. Nothing else in the game drags neighbouring blocks along with a piston.

Minecraft classifies Slime Block as a building block. Slime Block is made at a crafting table. A hardness of 0 means it is one of the quicker blocks to clear.

No specific tool is required to collect it. Broken correctly, it drops itself. Because it is transparent it does not block light.

A blast resistance of 0 means a single creeper will clear it away. It stacks to 64. You make it with Slimeball.

No recipe takes it as an ingredient.

How to get it

Craft it from 9 slimeballs, and uncraft it back to 9 at any time. Slimes spawn on swamp surfaces at night between Y 50 and Y 70 depending on the moon phase, and in slime chunks below Y 40.

Tips

  • Sneak to walk on a slime block without bouncing; otherwise every step launches you.
  • Slime does not stick to honey blocks, which is the trick that lets a flying machine separate its two halves.
  • A slime block landing pad cancels all fall damage, which makes it the cheapest safe drop from any height.
  • Piston pushing still respects the 12-block limit, so count every block the slime is dragging.

Properties

Slime Block has a blast resistance of 0, so any explosion nearby destroys it. It lets light through and emits no light of its own. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. Being renewable, it can be produced indefinitely in one world.
