Overview
The pale oak log is the trunk block of the tree added in 1.21.4, and it is the palest wood in Minecraft: a bleached grey-white bark over an almost bone-coloured interior that no other tree comes close to. It grows only in the pale garden, a rare desaturated variant of the dark forest, and like dark oak it grows in 2x2 clusters, so replanting one needs 4 pale oak saplings placed in a square with room above them. Naturally generated trunks are worth approaching carefully: some of them contain a creaking heart, the block that spawns the creaking at night, and cutting into a trunk after dusk may well introduce you to one. Stripped with an axe the log loses its bark for an even paler surface, and the full wood set — planks, stairs, slabs, fences, doors, trapdoors, signs, buttons and pressure plates — behaves identically to every other wood set in hardness, fuel value and recipes. Its only distinction is the colour, and for a builder that is the entire point: pale oak is the closest thing to white wood the game has.
The palest plank set in the game for builds that need light-coloured wood, plus stripped pale oak for an even whiter surface. It is also where creaking hearts and therefore resin are found.
Pale Oak Log is one of the 18 variants of this shape in the game. What changes between them is the material, and with it the hardness, the drops, the durability and the recipe — so every figure on this page is this variant's own. Oak Log is the same shape in a different material.
Pale Oak Log counts as a wooden block in Minecraft 1.21.4. There is no way to craft it; you have to find it and mine it. Its hardness of 2 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.
Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. A blast resistance of 2 means a single creeper will clear it away. It stacks to 64.
Its main value is as a crafting ingredient: 7 recipes need it, Campfire, Creaking Heart, Pale Oak Planks and 4 more among them.
About the pale oak set
How to get it
Chop it from pale oak trees in the pale garden biome, which generates rarely beside dark forest. Trees grow from 4 saplings placed in a 2x2 square, exactly like dark oak.
Tips
- It needs 4 saplings in a 2x2 to grow, so a single pale oak sapling will never become a tree.
- Clear a pale garden in daylight: creaking hearts inside the trunks are inert until dusk.
- Pale oak saplings grow anywhere with light and space, so a farm at home avoids the creaking entirely.
- Strip the logs with an axe for the palest wood texture in Minecraft — nothing else is close to white.
Version notes
Pale oak, the pale garden, the creaking and resin were all added in 1.21.4 (The Garden Awakens), released 3 December 2024.
How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 2, Pale Oak Log takes 3 seconds to punch out and 0.35 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
Iron manages 0.5 seconds and diamond 0.4, which makes iron the tier that changes how this block feels.
No particular tool tier is required: any tool, or none at all, still yields the drop, so the table below is about speed rather than about whether you get anything.
Each Efficiency level adds level² + 1 to the tool's speed, so a level V tool clears this about 3.5 times faster than an unenchanted one.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand | 3 s | 3 s | 3 s |
| Wooden | 1.5 s | 0.25 s | 0.15 s |
| Stone | 0.75 s | 0.25 s | 0.1 s |
| Iron | 0.5 s | 0.2 s | 0.1 s |
| Diamond | 0.4 s | 0.2 s | 0.1 s |
| Netherite | 0.35 s | 0.2 s | 0.1 s |
| Golden | 0.25 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
Properties
With 2 blast resistance Pale Oak Log goes down to any nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. It is renewable, so one world can supply as much of it as you want. Flammable, at encouragement 5 and burn 5: build with it away from lava, and do not use it as a wall you care about. An axe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for. As furnace fuel it burns for 15 seconds — one and a half smelting operations.
