Overview
The creaking heart, added in 1.21.4, is the strangest block in the game: it is a mob's life support. It generates inside the trunks of pale oak trees in the pale garden, wedged between pale oak logs, and at night it produces a creaking — the tall, pale mob that freezes solid whenever a player looks at it and only moves when nobody is watching. The creaking itself is functionally invulnerable. Hit it and the damage does nothing except flash a red line back through the air to the heart that made it, telling you exactly where the heart is. Destroy the heart and the creaking collapses immediately, which is the only way to be rid of one. The heart is active only at night; during the day it sits dormant and inert. Breaking a creaking heart scatters resin clumps on the surrounding blocks, which is the entry point to the whole resin material chain — resin clumps craft into resin blocks and on into resin bricks. One thing it will not do is work second-hand: the game marks naturally generated hearts, and a heart you place yourself will sit between two pale oak logs and pulse without ever producing a creaking.
It is the only way to kill a creaking, the source of resin clumps, and, collected with Silk Touch, a pulsing decorative block for a pale-garden build — though a heart you place yourself never produces a creaking again.
Creaking Heart counts as a building block in Minecraft 1.21.4. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Creaking Heart. A hardness of 10 makes it slow going without the right tool.
What you actually collect is Resin Clump. A full stack holds 64. It is crafted from Pale Oak Log and Block of Resin.
Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Break a naturally generated one inside a pale oak trunk in the pale garden. It must sit between 2 pale oak logs on the same axis to be active, and only a naturally generated heart spawns a creaking after dusk.
Tips
- Follow the red tether the creaking flashes when you hit it: it points directly at the heart keeping it alive.
- The heart is inert during the day, so clear a pale garden in daylight and the creakings never appear.
- Breaking a heart scatters resin clumps on the blocks around it — collect them before they are lost in the undergrowth.
- Only naturally generated hearts spawn a creaking; one you place yourself is decoration, however you frame it.

How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 10, Creaking Heart takes 15 seconds to punch out and 1.7 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
An iron tool takes 2.5 seconds and a diamond one 1.9, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to diamond.
Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.
Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 3.8 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Properties
Creaking Heart has a blast resistance of 10, so a nearby explosion will usually destroy it. It blocks light completely and emits no light of its own. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. The block is tagged for axes, and only that class gets the speed bonus; everything else mines at bare-hand rate. Broken normally it drops Resin Clump rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.
