Campfire

Overview

A campfire cooks four items at once with no fuel at all — put raw food on any of its four faces and it cooks in 30 seconds and drops on the ground. It is slower than a furnace per item, but it costs nothing to run and needs no attention, which makes it the right early-game cooking solution and a permanently good one for a base you pass through rather than live in. It also deals fire damage to anything that walks into it, which makes a line of campfires a serviceable mob barrier, and it emits light level 15, so it doubles as area lighting. Its smoke column rises 10 blocks, or 24 if a hay bale is placed directly underneath, which is how players build visible location markers that can be seen from a long way off. The single most useful trick is beekeeping: a campfire placed under a beehive or bee nest, or up to five blocks below it, calms the bees so you can shear the honeycomb or bottle the honey without the whole hive turning hostile. Water or a shovel puts it out; flint and steel relights it.

Campfire is a light-emitting block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. Campfire is made at a crafting table. Hardness 2 puts it in the middle of the pack for mining speed.

Breaking it produces Charcoal. It emits light level 15 — bright enough on its own to stop hostile mobs spawning nearby. Because it is transparent it does not block light.

A blast resistance of 2 means a single creeper will clear it away. It stacks to 64. You make it with Stick, Coal, and Oak Log.

No recipe takes it as an ingredient.

How to get it

Craft it from 3 sticks, 1 coal or charcoal and 3 logs of any type. Everything in that recipe comes from a single tree and one early coal vein, so a campfire is available on day one.

Tips

Place a campfire up to 5 blocks under a beehive and you can harvest honeycomb without angering a single bee.
A hay bale underneath raises the smoke column from 10 blocks to 24, which is visible across a whole biome.
Put a carpet on top and the campfire is hidden but keeps cooking and lighting — a common decorating trick.
It damages any mob or player standing in it, so a ring of campfires works as a cheap perimeter defence.

How long it takes to break

Campfire sits at hardness 2: 3 seconds per block with your fists, 0.35 with the correct netherite tool.

An iron tool takes 0.5 seconds and a diamond one 0.4, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to iron.

There is no tier requirement to worry about. Any tool, or none, returns the drop; the numbers below just say how fast.

The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 3.5 times the unenchanted rate.

Properties

Campfire has a blast resistance of 2, so any explosion nearby destroys it. It lets light through and emits light level 15. Stack size is 64 — the standard full stack. An axe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for. Broken normally it drops Charcoal rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead.
