A mob-proof base is built on one fact: hostile mobs in the Overworld spawn only on blocks with a block light level of 0. Everything else — walls, doors, moats, traps — deals with mobs that spawned somewhere else and walked to you. Solve the light first and the rest is a much smaller problem.
The spawn rules, precisely
For a hostile mob to spawn naturally in the Overworld, all of these must hold:
- The spawn block's block light level is 0. Sky light does not prevent spawns underground, and since the 1.18 lighting change there is no "light level 7" grace zone: it is 0 or nothing.
- The block below is solid, opaque and full. Slabs, stairs, glass, leaves, carpet and half-blocks do not qualify as spawn surfaces in the same way.
- There are two blocks of free space above.
- The location is more than 24 blocks from every player and within 128.
Some mobs have extra rules. Slimes spawn in specific chunks below Y=40 regardless of light, and in swamps at night. Drowned spawn in water. Phantoms spawn above you under open sky after three days without sleep. Silverfish come from infested blocks. None of these care about your torches, which is why a "fully lit" base can still surprise you.
Step one: light everything
Light sources and their levels:

A torch at level 14 loses 1 per block of distance, so it keeps blocks within 13 blocks above light 0 in open air — but corners, walls and elevation changes eat that quickly. In practice, a torch every 7 blocks in a grid covers a floor reliably, and every 6 is safer.
Do not forget:
- The roof and any flat surface on top of the base
- Ledges above head height inside tall rooms
- The area behind and underneath stairs
- Any cave you have broken into and left open
- The surrounding ground outside, out to at least 24 blocks, if you want a quiet perimeter
For a build where torches would look wrong, carpet and slabs both prevent spawns on the block beneath them without any light at all. Covering a roof in slabs or carpet is the standard aesthetic solution.
Step two: keep walkers out
Walls
A wall must be at least 2 blocks tall to stop zombies and skeletons, which cannot jump higher than 1 block plus their step-up.
Spiders climb any vertical surface, so a plain 2-block wall is not enough. Add an overhanging lip: a row of upside-down stairs or a slab jutting one block outwards at the top. Spiders cannot climb past an overhang, and it costs almost nothing.
Fences and walls count as 1.5 blocks tall for pathfinding, so a single row of fence stops mobs where a single row of full blocks would not. They still do not stop spiders.
Doors
- Wooden doors are broken by zombies on Hard difficulty. On Easy and Normal they are safe.
- Iron doors cannot be opened by any mob and cannot be broken. They need a button, lever or pressure plate — never a wooden pressure plate on the outside, since mobs can step on it.
- Trapdoors and fence gates are useful as entrances mobs cannot pathfind through. A fence gate looks solid to mob pathfinding.
The most robust entrance is an iron door with a stone button on both sides. It costs 6 iron ingots and is permanently mob-proof.
The water moat
A 2-block-wide, 2-block-deep water channel around a base pushes mobs away and drowns some of them. It is more work than lighting and mostly redundant if you have lit the perimeter, but it looks good and it handles the case where a mob wanders in from an unlit chunk boundary.
Step three: survive a creeper
A creeper that reaches your wall and detonates deals up to 49 damage at point-blank and destroys a roughly 3-block-radius crater in ordinary blocks. Three defences, in order of cost:
- Distance. A lit perimeter means creepers approach from outside your torch radius and you see them coming.
- Blast-resistant blocks at ground level. Obsidian has a blast resistance of 1,200 and is effectively immune. Cobblestone, stone bricks and deepslate are all far tougher than dirt or wood.
- A sacrificial outer layer. Building the outer wall one block thick with a gap behind it means an explosion removes decoration, not your storage room.
Creepers avoid cats and ocelots — they flee within 6 blocks of one. A couple of tamed cats sitting in a base is a genuine, if slightly silly, creeper defence.
Step four: the things lighting does not solve
Endermen teleport, including into your base, and pick up a specific set of blocks (dirt, grass, sand, gravel, flowers, mushrooms, TNT and a few more — not cobblestone or planks). They are neutral unless provoked. A base built from stone and wood is enderman-proof by material choice.
Phantoms ignore walls only in the sense that they attack you outdoors. Sleep every few nights and they never appear. A roof over any outdoor working area also stops them.
Witches and pillager raids arrive as events, not spawns. If you have cured a villager or triggered Bad Omen, a raid will spawn hostile mobs directly inside your village regardless of lighting. Build a small, well-lit, walled panic room with an iron door, and keep a bow in it.
Slimes below Y=40 in slime chunks ignore light entirely. If a basement keeps producing slimes, that is why — floor it with slabs or carpet, which removes valid spawn surfaces.
A checklist for a finished base
- Every interior floor block within 6 blocks of a light source
- Roof and outdoor platforms lit, slabbed or carpeted
- Perimeter lit out to 24 blocks, or walled at 2+ blocks with an overhanging lip
- Iron door with buttons as the main entrance
- Ground-level walls in cobblestone or better, obsidian at critical points
- All caves and ravines below the base sealed or lit
- A bed, used regularly
- No dirt, sand or gravel in enderman reach where it matters
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to light up caves under my base?
Only if they connect. Mobs spawn in dark caves regardless, but they can only reach you if there is a path. Sealing the connection with cobblestone is far cheaper than lighting an entire cave system. If you can hear mobs and cannot find them, the cave is connected somewhere you have not checked.
Does glass stop mobs from spawning?
Yes, in the sense that mobs cannot spawn on glass — it is not a valid spawn surface. Glass is also transparent, so it does not block light. It makes a good window and a good floor for a spawn-proof platform, though it is fragile against explosions.
Will torches on the ceiling work as well as on the floor?
Light propagates the same in every direction, so a ceiling torch lights the floor below it — but the light level at the floor is reduced by the vertical distance. In a 3-block-tall room, a ceiling torch is 2 levels weaker at floor level than a floor torch would be. Lanterns hung from the ceiling at level 15 solve this neatly.
Is a mob farm compatible with a mob-proof base?
Yes, and they work well together. A mob farm needs a large dark spawning area, which you build far enough away (or high enough up) that it does not compete with your base, and you spawn-proof everything else in the region so the farm captures the full mob cap. That last part is why serious mob farms are built out at sea or high above the surface.
