Overview
A bookshelf is a decorative block with one mechanical job that matters enormously: it powers an enchanting table. Fifteen bookshelves placed exactly two blocks away from the table, at the same level or one block higher, with an air gap between shelf and table, raise the maximum offered enchantment level to 30 — and level 30 is where Efficiency V, Fortune III, Protection IV, Sharpness V and the rest of the top tier come from. Fewer shelves does not merely slow you down; it makes those enchantments impossible from the table at all. Anything in the gap between the shelf and the table, including a torch or a carpet, cancels that shelf's contribution, which is the single most common reason a player's table refuses to offer level 30. Beyond enchanting, a bookshelf costs three books and six planks, which makes it expensive in paper — a full ring of fifteen is 45 books and 135 sugar cane — so a sugar cane farm is effectively a prerequisite for enchanting. Broken without Silk Touch it drops 3 books rather than itself, so the planks are lost.
Raising an enchanting table to the level 30 tier, which is the only way to get the highest enchantment levels from a table rather than an anvil, and lining a library wall.
Bookshelf is a building block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. Bookshelf has a crafting recipe, so it is renewable as long as you can source its ingredients. At a hardness of 1.5 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.
Instead of dropping itself it yields Book. It offers almost no protection from explosions (1.5 blast resistance). A full stack holds 64.
It is crafted from Oak Planks and Book. It goes into exactly one recipe: Lectern.
How to get it
Craft it from 6 wooden planks and 3 books; each book is 3 paper and 1 leather. A full 15-shelf enchanting setup therefore needs 45 books, which is 135 sugar cane and 45 leather.
Tips
- Exactly 15 shelves at 2 blocks' distance with an air gap unlock level 30 — more than 15 does nothing at all.
- A torch, carpet or any block in the gap cancels that shelf, which is the usual cause of a table stuck at level 8.
- Without Silk Touch a broken bookshelf drops only 3 books, so move them with Silk Touch to keep the planks.
- See the complete enchanting guide for the exact shelf layout around a table.
How long it takes to break
Bookshelf has a hardness of 1.5. By hand that is 2.3 seconds per block; with the correct tool at netherite tier it is 0.25 seconds.
Iron manages 0.4 seconds and diamond 0.3, which makes diamond the tier that changes how this block feels.
The drop does not depend on the tool — bare hands work as well as anything — so the table below is purely about speed.
The Efficiency formula is level² + 1 added to tool speed — at V that is about 2.5 times the unenchanted rate.
| Tool | No enchantment | Efficiency III | Efficiency V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand | 2.3 s | 2.3 s | 2.3 s |
| Wooden | 1.2 s | 0.2 s | 0.1 s |
| Stone | 0.6 s | 0.2 s | 0.1 s |
| Iron | 0.4 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
| Diamond | 0.3 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
| Netherite | 0.25 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
| Golden | 0.2 s | 0.15 s | 0.1 s |
Properties
With 1.5 blast resistance Bookshelf goes down to any nearby explosion. It is fully opaque and produces no light. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. Fire takes to it quickly — encouragement 5, burn 20 — which makes it a poor neighbour for lava or a lit campfire. An axe is fastest here; any other class mines it at bare-hand speed, because the bonus only applies to the class the block is tagged for. Broken normally it drops Book rather than itself; Silk Touch is what returns the block, and Fortune raises the ordinary drop instead. As furnace fuel it burns for 15 seconds — one and a half smelting operations.
