Paper

Overview

Paper is sugar cane made useful: three cane give three sheets, and those sheets become books, maps, fireworks and cartography. The two that matter most are books — three paper and one leather each, and a level-30 enchanting table needs fifteen bookshelves, which is 45 books and 135 paper — and firework rockets, which need one paper each and are the ongoing cost of Elytra flight. Paper is also the best early trade good in the game: a novice librarian buys 24 paper for a single emerald, restocks twice a day, and a modest automated sugar cane farm therefore turns into a steady emerald income with no combat and no mining involved. That trade is how most players fund their first Mending book. Cartography tables use paper to zoom and copy maps, and an empty map costs eight sheets plus a compass. Build the cane farm early, run it long rather than deep, and let the surplus accumulate — every later project consumes paper somewhere. Very few farms repay their build time as directly as a long row of sugar cane beside water.

Making books for bookshelves and enchanting, firework rockets for Elytra flight, maps for exploration, and the cheapest repeatable villager trade in the game. One crop, four completely different systems.

In Minecraft, Paper is a crafting material item. A full stack holds 64. It also turns up in chests in Shipwreck.

You make it with Sugar Cane. 10 recipes call for it, including Book, Bordure Indented Banner Pattern, Cartography Table and 7 more.

How to get it

Craft 3 from 3 sugar cane. Cane grows beside water on sand, dirt or moss with no tending, and a novice librarian buys 24 paper for 1 emerald, restocking twice a day.

Tips

A level-30 enchanting table needs 15 bookshelves — 135 paper and 45 leather, so plan the cane farm around it.
Sell 24 paper per emerald to a librarian; it is the fastest emerald income on a fresh world.
Firework rockets take 1 paper each, so a flyer burns through paper faster than any other use.
Harvest only the top two cane blocks so the plant regrows without replanting anything.

Properties

One inventory slot holds 64, so a double chest holds 3,456.
