Trial Chambers

Trial Chambers

OverworldUncommon

Overview

Trial chambers are the first Minecraft structure designed to be visited repeatedly rather than cleared once, and that changes how you should approach them. A trial spawner releases a fixed wave of mobs scaled to the number of players present, goes inert for thirty minutes, then refills — so a chamber near your base is a renewable source of experience, keys and loot rather than a single afternoon. Vaults are the other half of the design: each vault gives its loot to each player exactly once in exchange for a Trial Key, and no vault can be broken, re-rolled or farmed, which is why the structure resists automation. The ominous path is where the real rewards sit. Drink an Ominous Bottle inside the chamber and every trial spawner and vault upgrades: harder waves, more keys, and the ominous vault, which is the only source of the heavy core needed to craft the Mace. Fight with the terrain in mind — breezes deflect your arrows and knock you into the traps built into the corridors, and dispensers fire down the long halls on their own schedule. Copper and tuff are everywhere, so bring a spare pickaxe.

Repeatable combat loot: trial keys, ominous keys, the heavy core for the mace, wind charges, bolt and flow armour trims, diamonds, emeralds, enchanted books and two music discs. It is also the best renewable experience source in the Overworld once you know a chamber's layout.

A copper and tuff complex of interconnected combat rooms, corridors and reward vaults, generating throughout the Overworld underground. Trial spawners release a fixed wave of mobs scaled to the number of players, then go inert, which makes chambers repeatable rather than a one-time clear. Killing waves drops trial keys that open vaults for loot. Inserting an ominous bottle upgrades spawners and vaults into their ominous versions, harder fights with better rewards, and the ominous vault is the only source of the heavy core for the mace.

It is uncommon in the Overworld, and it generates underground, generally between about Y=-40 and Y=0.

How to get it

Trial chambers generate underground in every Overworld biome except the deep dark, roughly between Y=-40 and Y=0, and they are uncommon rather than rare. Tunnelling at about Y=-20 finds one reasonably quickly, and their copper and tuff walls are unmistakable when you break into a corridor.

Tips

  • Trial spawners scale their waves to how many players stand nearby, so a solo run is far easier than bringing a friend along.
  • Save ominous bottles for a chamber you have already mapped; the ominous waves are much harder and you do not want surprises.
  • Breezes are best handled in a corridor, where their wind charges cannot knock you off a ledge or into a dispenser line.
  • Read trial chambers, the mace and the heavy core before your first ominous run — the key chain is easy to break.

Version notes

Added in 1.21 alongside the breeze, the bogged, the mace and the crafter. 1.21.1 fixed vault and spawner behaviour without changing the structure itself.

Properties

It generates in the Overworld, which is the only dimension with a day-night cycle and weather, and the one every distance in the game is measured against. In a world with cheats on, /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers gives the coordinates of the nearest one. Without cheats, an explorer map from a cartographer villager is the reliable route for the structures that have one; everything else is exploration.

Notable loot

Its loot includes Trial Key, Ominous Trial Key, Heavy Core, Wind Charge, Diamond, Emerald, Enchanted Book, Music Disc — Creator, and Music Disc — Precipice. These are the notable entries rather than the full loot table — the common filler (bread, coal, iron nuggets) is omitted, and in some structures the best of it comes from a vault or a spawner rather than a chest.

Mobs found here

Breeze, Zombie, Husk, Skeleton, Stray, Bogged and 4 more generate here. Several of them spawn nowhere else, which is usually the reason to make the trip.

What to watch out for

4 things to prepare for before you go in:

  • Trial spawners scale their waves to the number of players present
  • Breezes knock you into lava, dispensers and traps
  • Dispenser and arrow traps built into corridors
  • Ominous trials are substantially harder

Frequently asked questions

How long until a trial spawner can be used again?

Thirty minutes after it finishes a wave. That cooldown is what makes chambers repeatable without being farmable in the usual redstone sense.

Where does the heavy core come from?

Ominous vaults only. You need an Ominous Bottle to make the chamber ominous, then an ominous trial key to open the vault, and the core is not guaranteed on every attempt.

Can you reopen a vault you have already looted?

No. Each vault pays out once per player and cannot be broken or reset, which is deliberate — the rewards are per person rather than per chest.

How do I find Trial Chambers?

Trial Chambers generates in the Overworld, and is uncommon. /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers finds the nearest one instantly with cheats on.

What loot is in Trial Chambers?

The notable entries are Trial Key, Ominous Trial Key, Heavy Core, Wind Charge, Diamond, Emerald and 3 more.

When was Trial Chambers added?

Trial Chambers was added in Java Edition 1.21.
