Overview
A Bogged trades health for damage over time and wins the exchange more often than it should. It carries 16 health, four fewer than an ordinary Skeleton, and its arrows are arrows of Poison rather than plain ones, so a single hit that looks survivable keeps ticking while the rest of a swamp closes in. Poison cannot kill you outright — it floors you at half a heart — but it stops natural regeneration dead, and that is what actually gets players killed at night in a mangrove swamp. Shields block its arrows completely, which is the whole counter. The second thing worth knowing is that a Bogged can be sheared. Use shears on one and the red or brown mushrooms growing out of its body come off, you keep them, and the mob's texture changes permanently — it is the only hostile mob in the game you can harvest without killing. It burns in daylight like the other skeleton variants. Added in 1.21 alongside the trial chambers, the Bogged spawns naturally at night in swamps and mangrove swamps and from trial spawners inside the chambers, which is where most players meet their first one, usually three at once.
Bones, arrows and free mushrooms. Its poison arrows also make it the cheapest source of a status-effect enemy to practise shield timing against before a trial chamber run.
A mossy, mushroom-crusted skeleton that fires arrows of Poison instead of ordinary ones. It has less health than a normal skeleton but its damage over time is far worse in a drawn-out fight, and the poison stacks with whatever else is hitting you in a swamp at night. Shearing a bogged with shears knocks its mushrooms off, giving you the mushrooms and changing its texture permanently.
Bogged is a hostile mob in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. You will need to deal 16 damage — 8 hearts — to kill one. Its attacks do 3 damage on Normal.
Killing one drops 5 experience.
Properties
Bogged has 16 health, which is 8 hearts. It drops up to 5 experience when a player kills it. Its hitbox is 0.6 blocks wide and 1.99 tall, which is what decides whether it fits through a gap or a one-block-high opening.

Damage by difficulty
Bogged hits for 3 on every difficulty; its damage does not scale the way most hostile mobs' does.
A full set of diamond armour cuts that by up to 80% against a small hit and less against a large one, and Protection IV on all four pieces — 16 EPF — takes a further 64% off what is left.

Drops
Killing Bogged drops Bone and Arrow, plus up to 5 experience. Looting raises the maximum on most of these by one per level.
How it behaves
The Bogged attacks on sight within its detection range, so light, walls and distance are all valid answers. Most hostile mobs notice you inside about sixteen blocks, though a few — ghasts especially — see very much further.
Killed by a player it drops up to 5 experience; killed any other way it drops none.
Command
In a world with cheats on, this spawns one Bogged where you are standing.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Bogged in Minecraft?
A mossy, mushroom-covered skeleton added in 1.21 that shoots arrows of Poison. It has 16 health instead of a skeleton's 20.
Can you shear a Bogged?
Yes. Shears knock its mushrooms off, you collect them, and its texture changes permanently. It is the only shearable hostile mob.
Where do Bogged spawn?
Swamps and mangrove swamps at night, and from trial spawners inside trial chambers.
Do Bogged burn in daylight?
Yes, the same as skeletons and strays, unless they are in water, in shade or wearing a helmet.
How much health does the Bogged have in Minecraft?
The Bogged has 16 health points, which is 8 hearts.
What does the Bogged drop?
It drops Bone and Arrow, plus 5 experience when killed by a player.
Where does the Bogged spawn?
Spawns naturally at night in swamps and mangrove swamps, and from trial spawners in trial chambers.
How much damage does Bogged do?
3 on Normal difficulty — 1.5 hearts — with 3 on Easy and 3 on Hard.
How to get it
Bogged spawn at night at light level 0 in swamp and mangrove swamp biomes, and from trial spawners in trial chambers. Each drops 0 to 2 bones, 0 to 2 arrows and 5 experience; shearing one yields mushrooms without killing it.
Tips
- Shear a Bogged before you kill it — the mushrooms drop immediately and the shears lose only one durability point.
- Raise a shield and walk straight at it; blocked arrows apply no poison at all, which removes its only real advantage.
- Drink milk if you get poisoned mid-fight, because Poison blocks the natural regeneration you need between waves.
- In a trial chamber, deal with the Breeze first — being knocked about while poisoned is what kills runs.
