Overview

Mangrove swamp is the tangled, waterlogged variant of swamp added in 1.19, and everything in it is unique to it. Mangrove trees grow out of the water on stilted root blocks that you can walk under and build through, and their propagules hang from the leaves and replant themselves into water — the only tree in the game you can grow directly in a water block. The floor is mud, which is made by using a water bottle on dirt, and mud crafts into packed mud and then mud bricks for a warm brown building set. Frogs live here, and this is where the froglight chain starts: a frog that eats a small magma cube produces a froglight, and which of the three colours you get depends on the frog's variant rather than the cube — temperate frogs give ochre, warm frogs pearlescent, cold frogs verdant. Tadpoles caught in a bucket grow into whichever variant matches the biome you release them in, which is how players collect all 3 colours. Slimes spawn here at night as in any swamp, and there is no witch hut — those are the ordinary swamp only. It borders swamp, jungle and ocean.

Mangrove wood and roots for building, mud and mud bricks, froglights as a decorative light source, tadpoles for froglight farming, and propagules for a tree you can plant in water.

Mangrove Swamp sits in the warm band of Minecraft's biome table, generating in the Overworld at a base temperature of 0.8.

Weather reaches Mangrove Swamp: it rains during storms, so crops grow and cauldrons fill on their own.

One generated structure can appear here, among them Swamp Hut (Witch Hut).

5 mobs name Mangrove Swamp specifically among their spawn biomes: Bee, Bogged, Drowned, Frog and 1 more.

Forest biomes are the game's default temperate terrain: trees dense enough to need a path cut through them, grass and flowers on the floor, and passive animals in the clearings. They are where most players build, because wood, food and a flat-enough surface all occur together.

How to get it

Mangrove swamp generates in hot, wet lowlands, often beside jungle or ordinary swamp. Bring 1 bucket for a tadpole and expect a 1,000-block search; the raised red-brown roots are visible from a distance.

Tips

  • Froglight colour follows the frog, not the magma cube, so raise tadpoles in 3 different climates to collect all 3.
  • Mud is made anywhere by using a water bottle on a dirt block, so you do not need to haul it home from the swamp.
  • Mangrove roots are waterloggable and see-through, which makes them the best block in the game for a submerged walkway.
  • Bring shears: mangrove leaves and the vines here only drop intact with shears, and propagules need the leaves cleared first.

Version notes

Mangrove swamps, mud, mangrove wood, frogs, tadpoles and froglights all arrived in 1.19 (The Wild Update) and are unchanged in 1.21.4.

Climate and generation

Mangrove Swamp has a base temperature of 0.8, which puts it in the warm band. Temperature is not a thermometer reading — it is the single number that decides snow versus rain, whether water freezes over, and what colour the grass renders.

Above 0.15 water stays liquid and any precipitation falls as rain.

Mobs in Mangrove Swamp

Bee, Bogged, Drowned, Frog, and Tadpole name Mangrove Swamp specifically as a spawn biome, so this is where you go to find them.

On top of those, the mobs that spawn in open terrain anywhere in the Overworld can appear here too, given the right light level. Mobs that only come from a structure or a spawner — breezes from trial chambers, blazes from fortresses, evokers from mansions — are deliberately not in this list.

Also spawns throughout Overworld

Structures found here

One structure can generate in Mangrove Swamp: Swamp Hut (Witch Hut).

  • Swamp Hut (Witch Hut) — A small stilted shack of spruce planks standing over swamp water, registered internally as the swamp hut and known to everyone as the witch hut.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find Mangrove Swamp?

Mangrove Swamp generates in the Overworld. A locate command finds the nearest one instantly; without cheats, exploring in one direction and watching the F3 screen's biome line is the reliable method.

What spawns in Mangrove Swamp?

Bee, Bogged, Drowned, Frog, and Tadpole spawn here specifically, and the usual Overworld mobs can appear given the right light level.

Does it rain in Mangrove Swamp?

Yes — as rain. Cauldrons fill on their own during a storm and farmland stays hydrated.
