If you want the fastest route to good gear, four structures matter above the rest: trial chambers for diamonds and armour trims at low risk, desert pyramids for early diamonds, bastion remnants for the netherite upgrade template, and end cities for elytra and shulker boxes. Everything else is either common enough to find by accident or too dangerous to be worth a special trip.

The ones worth a deliberate trip
Trial chambers are the best risk-to-reward structure in the game. They generate deep underground, contain trial spawners that stop producing mobs once cleared, and their vaults hand out diamonds, enchanted gear, armour trims and the heavy core needed for a mace. Nothing in them is as dangerous as a warden or a bastion.
Igloos with a basement contain a zombie villager, a golden apple and a splash potion of weakness in one place — everything you need to perform a cure and start a discounted trading hall.
Woodland mansions are the only source of totems of undying outside raids. A totem consumed on death restores you to 1 health with Regeneration II and Absorption, which is the strongest survival item in the game. Buy the map from a cartographer rather than searching.
Ancient cities hold the best loot in the Overworld and the warden. Go with wool to muffle your steps, sneak the entire time, and treat any sculk shrieker activation as a signal to leave.
Nether structures
| Structure | Rarity | The loot worth having |
|---|---|---|
| Nether fortress | Common | Blaze spawners, nether wart, diamonds, saddles, gold horse armour |
| Bastion remnant | Uncommon | Netherite upgrade smithing template, gold blocks, ancient debris, enchanted gear |
| Ruined portal (Nether) | Common | Obsidian, flint and steel, gold, golden apples |
| Nether fossil | Uncommon | Bone blocks in quantity |
A nether fortress is a required stop: blaze rods are the only route to brewing stands and eyes of ender, and wither skeleton skulls only drop there.
A bastion remnant is the only source of the netherite upgrade template, which you must have before any diamond gear becomes netherite. One template is enough — it can be duplicated with 7 netherrack and a diamond.
End structures
| Structure | Rarity | The loot worth having |
|---|---|---|
| Obsidian pillars | Very common | The end crystals that heal the dragon |
| End gateway | Common | The route to the outer islands |
| End city | Uncommon | Diamond and iron gear, enchanted books, shulker boxes |
| End ship | Rare | The elytra, a dragon head, diamond blocks |
End cities generate in clusters across the outer islands. Roughly one in every few cities has a ship attached, and only ships contain elytra. Bring ender pearls, a water bucket for the drops, and expect shulkers — their Levitation followed by a long fall is the main cause of death out there.
Shulker boxes are the other prize: they keep their contents when broken, which permanently solves inventory management.
Finding structures without cheating
- Cartographer villagers sell explorer maps to woodland mansions and ocean monuments. This is by far the most efficient way to find either.
- Buried treasure maps come from shipwreck and ocean ruin chests, and they always lead to a real chest.
- Eyes of ender locate the nearest stronghold.
- Ruined portals are so common that walking in any direction for a few hundred blocks usually finds one.
- Elevation is the underrated method: climbing a mountain and looking around finds villages, pillager outposts and desert pyramids faster than any wandering at ground level.
A rough order of visits
- Village — trading, beds, food, iron
- Ruined portal — free obsidian for your Nether portal
- Desert pyramid or shipwreck — early diamonds
- Nether fortress — blaze rods and nether wart
- Bastion remnant — the netherite template
- Trial chambers — diamonds, trims, a heavy core
- Stronghold — the End portal
- End city and ship — elytra and shulker boxes
- Ancient city — last, when you can afford to lose the trip
Frequently asked questions
Which structure has the best loot overall?
For raw value, the end ship: an elytra changes movement permanently and nothing else in the game replaces it. For loot per unit of risk, trial chambers, which hand out diamonds, enchanted gear and armour trims without anything as lethal as a warden or a bastion. For a specific need, the woodland mansion's totems of undying.
Do structures respawn or refill their chests?
No. Loot chests generate once and stay looted. The exceptions are structures with renewable mechanics rather than chests: trial spawners and vaults in trial chambers can be run again by other players, and spawners in dungeons keep producing mobs until you break or light them.
Is it safe to break a spawner?
Breaking it stops the mobs permanently and gives 15–43 experience, but you cannot pick it up without commands, and Silk Touch does not work on spawners. Before you break one, consider building a mob farm around it — a dungeon spawner is a free source of experience, gunpowder, bones and string.
How do I survive an ancient city?
Sneak the entire time, since sneaking produces no vibrations. Lay wool as a silent path if you need to cross open ground. Never sprint, place blocks carelessly, or throw items. Treat the first sculk shrieker activation as a warning and the second as an instruction to leave — the third summons the warden, which you cannot beat with survival gear.
Which structures can I find in every world?
Strongholds, ruined portals, mineshafts, dungeons, villages, nether fortresses and end cities all generate in every world with default settings. Structures tied to specific biomes — desert pyramids, jungle pyramids, ocean monuments, ancient cities, woodland mansions — depend on those biomes existing within reach, which is why some worlds require very long trips to find a mansion.
