Blaze Rod

Overview

A Blaze Rod is the item that unlocks brewing and the End, and there is exactly one place to get it: a blaze, which spawns only in Nether fortresses. That single fact structures the mid-game of every world — you cannot brew a potion without a brewing stand, the stand needs a rod, and you cannot find a stronghold without eyes of ender, which need blaze powder. One rod crafts into 2 Blaze Powder, and powder is both the brewing stand's fuel and the ingredient in eyes of ender, magma cream, fire charges and Potions of Strength. Blazes drop 0 to 1 rod per kill, rising with Looting, and they are dangerous — ranged fireballs, flight, and a habit of spawning in threes from a spawner. The standard approach is to find a fortress spawner, wall it in to a safe platform, and farm it with a shield up and Fire Resistance running. Twenty rods is a comfortable target: enough for a stand, a stack of eyes and a long brewing career. No other single drop gates as much of the game behind one dangerous mob.

Look for it in the loot of Nether Fortress. It is an ingredient in 11 recipes, among them Blaze Powder, Brewing Stand, Copper Bulb and 8 more.

How to get it

Kill a blaze in a nether fortress; each drops 0 to 1 rod, up to 4 with Looting III. A blaze spawner farmed safely yields 20 or more rods in a single session.

Tips

Drink Fire Resistance before approaching a spawner; blaze fireballs are the main cause of failed fortress trips.
Blazes take extra damage from Snowballs, which is a genuinely viable ranged option with no bow.
Wall the spawner into a 9×9 room with a single opening; blazes fly, so the ceiling matters as much as the walls.
Bring 20 rods home rather than 5 — the return trip is long and the whole brewing tree depends on them.
