Overview
A brewing stand turns water bottles into potions, and it is the only block that does. It has three bottle slots, one ingredient slot above them and a fuel slot on the left, and the crucial efficiency fact is that all three bottles brew simultaneously from one ingredient — brewing three potions costs exactly the same time and materials as brewing one, so brewing in threes is always correct. Blaze powder is the fuel, and one powder covers 20 brewing operations. The chain is fixed: water bottle plus nether wart gives an awkward potion, and every useful potion except Weakness starts from there. Add the effect ingredient, then optionally redstone dust to extend the duration, glowstone dust to strengthen it, or a fermented spider eye to corrupt it into its opposite. Gunpowder converts any potion into a splash potion and dragon's breath converts a splash into a lingering one. The stand also serves as the cleric villager's job site block, which is worth knowing because a cleric buys rotten flesh and sells bottles of enchanting. It emits a small amount of light and shows a visible bubbling animation while brewing.
Fire Resistance for the Nether, Water Breathing for monuments, Healing and Regeneration for fights, Strength for bosses, and splash potions of Weakness for curing zombie villagers into discounted traders.
In Minecraft 1.21.4, Brewing Stand is a functional block. Brewing Stand is made at a crafting table. A hardness of 0.5 means it is one of the quicker blocks to clear.
No specific tool is required to collect it. Broken correctly, it drops itself. It glows faintly at light level 1.
It is transparent, which matters when you are managing light levels. With a blast resistance of only 0.5 it will not survive an explosion. Sixty-four fit in one inventory slot.
The recipe calls for Blaze Rod and Cobblestone. It is not used in any crafting recipe.
How to get it
Craft it from 1 blaze rod and 3 cobblestone. Blaze rods drop from blazes in nether fortresses, so a brewing stand is gated behind at least one fortress trip and a blaze spawner.
Tips
- Always brew 3 bottles at once — the ingredient and the time cost the same whether you brew 1 or 3.
- 1 blaze powder fuels 20 operations, so keep a stack of rods and grind them as you need rather than in advance.
- Redstone extends duration and glowstone raises the level, but never both: the second one replaces the first.

How long it takes to break
At a hardness of 0.5, Brewing Stand takes 0.75 seconds to punch out and 0.1 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.
Iron takes 0.15 seconds against diamond's 0.1, so the upgrade worth making for this block is the one to diamond.
Nothing here needs a minimum tier: whatever you swing, the block still drops, and the only difference is how long it takes.
Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 2 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Properties
Brewing Stand resists blasts at 0.5, which is not enough to survive anything explosive nearby. Light passes through it, and it emits at level 1. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. A pickaxe is the fastest choice here. A tool of the wrong class is no better than your fist — the speed bonus is tied to the block's own tool tag.
