In Minecraft 1.21.4, Cobblestone is a stone-family block. It is gathered by mining rather than crafted. At a hardness of 2 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.

It needs at least a wooden pickaxe to drop anything; a weaker tool destroys it for nothing. Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. A full stack holds 64.

It is an ingredient in 22 recipes, among them Andesite, Brewing Stand, Coast Armor Trim and 19 more.

At a hardness of 2, Cobblestone takes 10 seconds to punch out and 0.35 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.

Iron takes 0.5 seconds against diamond's 0.4, so the upgrade worth making for this block is the one to iron.

The block still breaks with a weaker tool, but below wooden it yields nothing at all — the time is spent and the drop is lost, which is the single most common way players waste a vein.

Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, which makes Efficiency V roughly 3.5 times faster than the plain tool.

Properties

Cobblestone resists blasts at 6, which usually is not enough when something explodes nearby. Light does not pass through it, and it emits none of its own. 64 fit in a slot — a full stack. It is renewable, so one world can supply as much of it as you want. The fastest tool for it is a pickaxe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for.
