Overview
A Stone Axe is quietly one of the best early-game weapons in Minecraft, and almost nobody uses it that way. It deals 9 damage a swing — two more than a diamond sword — which means a fully charged hit kills a zombie in three and a skeleton in two. The catch is the 0.8 attacks per second recovery, so against several mobs at once the sword's faster rhythm wins; against a single creeper walking towards you, the axe wins outright. Add its actual job, which is chopping, and 131 uses of free cobblestone is doing a great deal of work for a starter world. It breaks logs roughly twice as fast as the wooden tier, strips bark, smashes chests and bookshelves quickly, and scrapes oxidation off copper blocks. The reason to keep both an axe and a sword in the hotbar early on is that they solve different problems: the sword for crowds and cobwebs, the axe for single hard hits and for wood. Stone is where that pairing first becomes affordable. Try it on the next skeleton you meet and the damage figure stops being an abstraction.

- Blackstone from the Nether crafts the same axe, so a fortress trip never needs cobblestone carried along.
- Chop from the bottom log upwards and the whole trunk stays reachable without scaffolding or jumping.

A swing that lands before the cooldown bar refills deals a fraction of that, so waiting for the bar is worth more than clicking faster.

Properties
Stone Axe lasts 131 uses before it breaks, and Cobbled Deepslate repairs it on an anvil. Two worn copies can also be merged, on an anvil or a grindstone. Unbreaking III roughly quadruples the lifespan, and Mending replaces the repair cost with experience. Its enchantability of 5 decides how good the enchanting table's offers are: the higher the number, the more often a level-30 table offers the top-tier enchantment rather than a weak one. Stone Axe does not stack — each one occupies an inventory slot of its own.
