Overview
A Stone Pickaxe unlocks iron, and unlocking iron is what actually starts a Minecraft world. It mines iron ore, copper ore and lapis lazuli ore in addition to everything the wooden tier could handle, runs twice as fast at a mining multiplier of 4, and lasts 131 uses — enough to strip a decent starter tunnel and come home with a stack of ore. Because the material is free, most players simply carry two or three rather than repairing one. What it cannot do is worth memorising: gold, redstone, diamond and emerald ore all break and drop nothing under a stone pickaxe, and that silent loss is the most common early-game mistake there is. If you see the blue speckles of diamond at the bottom of a cave with only stone tools, go back for iron first. Enchantability is the worst in the game at 5, so a stone pickaxe is never worth enchanting — Efficiency on it is a waste of levels that would transform an iron one instead. Carry a spare, mine three iron ore, and this tier is behind you before the second night arrives.

Tips
- Never swing it at diamond, gold, redstone or emerald ore: the block breaks and the drop is lost entirely.
- Cobbled deepslate and blackstone work in the same recipe, so you are never far from a replacement.
- Skip enchanting stone tools; an enchantability of 5 gives the weakest rolls of any material in the game.
- The ore Y-levels tool shows exactly where to dig for the iron this pickaxe is meant to find.
Damage and attack speed
Stone Pickaxe deals 3 damage per hit and swings 1.2 times a second, which works out at 3.6 damage per second when every swing is fully charged.
A swing that lands before the cooldown bar refills deals a fraction of that, so waiting for the bar is worth more than clicking faster.
That is 7 hits to kill a zombie or a creeper, the same for a skeleton, and 6 hits for a spider.
Properties
Stone Pickaxe lasts 131 uses before it breaks, and Cobbled Deepslate repairs it on an anvil. Two worn copies can also be merged, on an anvil or a grindstone. Unbreaking III roughly quadruples the lifespan, and Mending replaces the repair cost with experience. Its enchantability of 5 decides how good the enchanting table's offers are: the higher the number, the more often a level-30 table offers the top-tier enchantment rather than a weak one. Stone Pickaxe does not stack — each one occupies an inventory slot of its own.
