It can mine stone, coal ore, copper ore and the other soft materials, and nothing beyond that: iron ore breaks and drops nothing if you try. Its 59 uses are just enough to gather the cobblestone for a stone pickaxe and a small starter shelter, which is exactly the job it is designed for. The correct first-day sequence is punch a tree, craft planks and sticks, make a crafting table, craft a wooden pickaxe, mine about 20 cobblestone, and immediately craft a stone pickaxe — after which the wooden one is worth keeping only as a spare. Mining speed is the slowest of any tier at a multiplier of 2, so every extra second spent with it is wasted. The one thing it does that later tools do not is cost nothing, which is why the standard advice for a fresh world or a hardcore restart is to make two, not one, and never look back. Nothing about it rewards attachment, and the fastest first days are the ones where it is obsolete within five minutes of being made.

Tips
- Mine only cobblestone with it; iron ore hit with a wooden pickaxe breaks and drops absolutely nothing.
- Make two on the first day so a break underground does not cost you the trip back to a tree.
- It is the slowest tier in the game at a mining multiplier of 2, so upgrade the moment you have 3 cobblestone.
- A furnace, a crafting table and a stone pickaxe are the real first-day goals — see your first day.
Damage and attack speed
Wooden Pickaxe deals 2 damage per hit and swings 1.2 times a second, which works out at 2.4 damage per second when every swing is fully charged.
A swing that lands before the cooldown bar refills deals a fraction of that, so waiting for the bar is worth more than clicking faster.
That is 10 hits to kill a zombie or a creeper, the same for a skeleton, and 8 hits for a spider.
Properties
Wooden Pickaxe lasts 59 uses before it breaks, and Oak Planks repairs it on an anvil. Two worn copies can also be merged, on an anvil or a grindstone. Unbreaking III roughly quadruples the lifespan, and Mending replaces the repair cost with experience. Its enchantability of 15 decides how good the enchanting table's offers are: the higher the number, the more often a level-30 table offers the top-tier enchantment rather than a weak one.
