Overview
A Stone Hoe doubles a wooden one's working life for material you are already carrying by the stack, and 131 tilled blocks is a farm big enough to feed a village. The upgrade also doubles the attack speed to 2.0, which sounds irrelevant on a tool that deals 1 damage — and mostly is, except that hoes with high attack speed break the hoe-preferred blocks faster too. What actually makes stone the right early tier is replacement cost. A hoe is the tool most likely to be used until it breaks, since nobody notices durability while tilling, and cobblestone is free. Beyond the field, the block list a hoe handles best is worth memorising: hay bales, target blocks, sponge, dried kelp blocks, moss blocks, shroomlights, nether wart blocks and sculk. Several of those turn up in bulk when raiding a village, a Nether forest or an ancient city, and clearing them with a pickaxe is several times slower. Keep the hoe in the hotbar on any trip that involves harvesting rather than mining. It is the tier at which the hoe stops being a first-day formality and starts earning its slot.
Preparing larger farm plots without stopping to re-craft, and stripping hay bales, moss and shroomlights out of villages, lush caves and Nether forests quickly. Free to replace, quick to repair.
Stone Hoe is a tool item in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. Durability is 131. An anvil plus Cobbled Deepslate, Cobblestone, and Blackstone restores it; two worn copies can also be merged.
It can be enchanted, which is usually worth doing before heavy use. It is unstackable. The recipe calls for Cobblestone and Stick.
It is not used in any crafting recipe.
About the stone tool set
How to get it
Craft 1 from 2 Cobblestone and 2 Sticks. At 131 uses it tills more than a full 11×11 farm plot before needing a single repair on an anvil.
Tips
- Bring it to a village raid for the hay bales — a stone hoe clears a farm's storage far faster than an axe.
- Hoes are the correct tool for moss blocks, which matters when harvesting a lush caves ceiling.
- One cobblestone on an anvil repairs a quarter of the bar, so a stone hoe rarely needs to be re-crafted.
- Till the whole plot before planting; walking over untilled ground later compacts nothing, but jumping ruins rows.
Damage and attack speed
Stone Hoe deals 1 damage per hit and swings 2 times a second, which works out at 2 damage per second when every swing is fully charged.
A swing that lands before the cooldown bar refills deals a fraction of that, so waiting for the bar is worth more than clicking faster.
That is 20 hits to kill a zombie or a creeper, the same for a skeleton, and 16 hits for a spider.
Properties
Stone Hoe lasts 131 uses before it breaks, and Cobbled Deepslate repairs it on an anvil. Two worn copies can also be merged, on an anvil or a grindstone. Unbreaking III roughly quadruples the lifespan, and Mending replaces the repair cost with experience. Its enchantability of 5 decides how good the enchanting table's offers are: the higher the number, the more often a level-30 table offers the top-tier enchantment rather than a weak one. Stone Hoe does not stack — each one occupies an inventory slot of its own.

How it compares to the rest of the set
Every tier of hoe in the game, side by side, so the trade-off is visible in one place: Stone Hoe sits 2 of 6.
Gold is the outlier: it enchants better than anything else (enchantability 22) and breaks almost immediately, which is why gold gear is enchanted and then upgraded rather than used.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make Stone Hoe in Minecraft?
Stone Hoe is crafted from Cobblestone and Stick.
What is the stack size of Stone Hoe?
Stone Hoe does not stack at all. Every one you carry takes an inventory slot of its own, which is the practical limit on how many you take on a trip.
How much damage does Stone Hoe do?
1 damage per fully charged hit, at 2 attacks per second — 2 damage per second. Strength II adds 6 damage on top of that.
How much durability does Stone Hoe have?
Stone Hoe has 131 durability, and can be repaired on an anvil with Cobbled Deepslate.
Can Stone Hoe be enchanted?
Yes — 5 enchantments apply to it, at an enchanting table with fifteen bookshelves, or from an enchanted book on an anvil. Mending is usually the one worth hunting for, because it removes the repair cost entirely.
The rest of the set
Stone Hoe is one of 6 variants of the same shape. The others are made from different materials, so their numbers differ:
