Overview
An Iron Axe is the version most players settle on for the long middle of a world, because it chops fast enough to clear a forest and survives 250 uses of doing it. Damage is 9 a swing at 0.9 attacks per second, marginally quicker than stone, which makes it a credible off-hand-free weapon against pillagers and vindicators — and against any mob or player carrying a shield, since an axe hit disables a shield for 5 seconds. That shield-break is the reason axes appear in PvP kits at all. In building terms it is the tool that unlocks the stripped-log palette: strip spruce, birch and dark oak logs and you have three more block textures without another recipe. It also scrapes the wax off waxed copper and removes one stage of oxidation per strike, which makes an axe essential to anyone building with the copper set. Repairs cost a single ingot, and Efficiency turns a jungle tree into planks in a couple of seconds. Iron's high enchantability of 14 makes it worth enchanting long before diamond arrives. For most worlds this is where the axe question quietly stops being interesting.

Tips
- An axe strike disables a shield for 5 seconds, so switch to the axe when a vindicator or a player raises one.
- Strip logs before placing them — a stripped log cannot be un-stripped, so decide the palette first.
- Use the axe on copper to remove wax or step the oxidation back one stage without breaking the block.
- Efficiency IV on an iron axe fells a large jungle tree faster than an unenchanted diamond one does.

Iron Axe lasts 250 uses before it breaks, and Iron Ingot repairs it on an anvil. Two worn copies can also be merged, on an anvil or a grindstone. Unbreaking III roughly quadruples the lifespan, and Mending replaces the repair cost with experience. Its enchantability of 14 decides how good the enchanting table's offers are: the higher the number, the more often a level-30 table offers the top-tier enchantment rather than a weak one.
