Piston

Overview

A piston pushes blocks. Give it a redstone signal and its head extends one block, shoving whatever is in front of it up to 12 blocks along, and when the signal stops the head retracts and leaves the pushed blocks where they landed. That simple behaviour underpins almost every moving build in Minecraft: hidden doors, drawbridges, block swappers, mob crushers, sand and gravel duplicators, and the harvest mechanism in most automatic farms. There are rules worth learning. A piston cannot push more than 12 blocks at once and will simply refuse to fire if asked to. It cannot push obsidian, bedrock, an end portal frame, a spawner or any block with an inventory such as a chest or a furnace. Blocks such as glazed terracotta and slime interact specially: slime and honey blocks drag their neighbours along, which is what makes flying machines possible. A piston head occupies the block in front while extended, and anything standing there is pushed rather than crushed — except against a wall, where a player takes no damage but a mob is squeezed out to the side. Quasi-connectivity means a piston can also be powered from a block diagonally above it.

Hidden doors and drawbridges, automatic harvesting in sugar cane and pumpkin farms, moving blocks into and out of the way, and every flying machine and self-building bridge in the game.

Piston is a redstone block in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4. A crafting table turns its ingredients into Piston. Its hardness of 1.5 makes it a normal, unhurried block to mine.

Mining it returns the block itself, so it is safe to relocate. A blast resistance of 1.5 means a single creeper will clear it away. It stacks to 64.

You make it with Oak Planks, Cobblestone, Iron Ingot, and Redstone Dust. The one thing it makes is Sticky Piston.

How to get it

Craft a piston from 3 wooden planks, 4 cobblestone, 1 iron ingot and 1 redstone dust. Adding a slimeball turns it into a sticky piston, so a normal piston is always the cheaper half of the pair.

Tips

A piston refuses to fire if it would need to push more than 12 blocks — count before you build a long wall pusher.
It cannot push chests, furnaces, spawners, obsidian or bedrock, which is a design constraint rather than a bug.
Quasi-connectivity means a block powered diagonally above a piston can still fire it; use it deliberately or avoid it.
Pair with an observer for a 1-tick pulse so the head extends and retracts without leaving the block displaced.

How long it takes to break

At a hardness of 1.5, Piston takes 2.3 seconds to punch out and 0.25 seconds with a netherite-tier tool of the correct class.

You are looking at 0.4 seconds on iron and 0.3 on diamond — the diamond step is where the time actually falls.

There is no tier requirement to worry about. Any tool, or none, returns the drop; the numbers below just say how fast.

Efficiency contributes its level squared plus one to tool speed, which makes Efficiency V roughly 2.5 times faster than the plain tool.

Properties

Blast resistance on Piston is 1.5, so any explosion nearby takes it out. It stops light entirely and gives off no light. A single slot takes 64, the usual full stack. The fastest tool for it is a pickaxe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for.
