Overview
A sticky piston is an ordinary piston that keeps hold of the block it pushed and drags it back on retraction. That one difference is the whole of redstone building. A normal piston can only shove things away; a sticky piston can move a block out and then return it, which is what makes a hidden door close, a block swapper alternate and a flying machine advance. It pulls exactly one block, not a column — the pulled block's neighbours are left behind unless they are attached by slime or honey. The two sticky blocks matter here: slime blocks stick to almost everything and honey blocks stick to almost everything, but slime and honey do not stick to each other, which is the trick that lets a machine leave part of itself behind on each cycle. There is one classic gotcha: give a sticky piston a signal shorter than about two redstone ticks and it drops the block instead of pulling it back, which is the basis of block-dropper designs and also the reason a machine driven by an observer sometimes leaves debris. Sticky pistons cannot pull blocks with inventories, obsidian or bedrock, exactly like the plain version.

In Minecraft 1.21.4, Sticky Piston is a redstone block. Sticky Piston has a crafting recipe, so it is renewable as long as you can source its ingredients. At a hardness of 1.5 it takes a moment to break but never slows a build down.
Broken correctly, it drops itself. It offers almost no protection from explosions (1.5 blast resistance). A full stack holds 64.
It is crafted from Slimeball and Piston. Nothing on the crafting grid is made from it.
How to get it
Craft it from 1 piston and 1 slimeball. Slimeballs come from slimes, which spawn on the surface of swamps at night between Y 50 and Y 70, or in slime chunks below Y 40, and from baby panda drops.
Tips
- A pulse shorter than 2 redstone ticks makes the piston drop its block instead of retracting it — use a repeater to lengthen it.

Sticky Piston sits at hardness 1.5: 2.3 seconds per block with your fists, 0.25 with the correct netherite tool.
An iron tool takes 0.4 seconds and a diamond one 0.3, so the jump that actually matters for this block is the one to diamond.
The drop does not depend on the tool — bare hands work as well as anything — so the table below is purely about speed.
Efficiency adds its level squared plus one to the tool speed, so Efficiency V is about 2.5 times faster than the same tool unenchanted.

Sticky Piston has a blast resistance of 1.5, so any explosion nearby destroys it. It blocks light completely and emits no light of its own. One inventory slot holds 64, the normal full stack. The fastest tool for it is a pickaxe; any other kind of tool mines it no faster than a bare hand does, because the speed bonus only applies to the tool class the block is tagged for.
